Clock this: UK may consider time zone switch

(AP) ? Britain's government may reconsider long-touted proposals for the U.K. to switch to Central European Time, a move which advocates insisted Saturday would bring lighter evenings and possibly offer the country's sluggish economy a boost.

Campaigners claim a lawmaker's proposal made earlier this year to permanently switch Britain's clocks 60 minutes ahead of current settings would extend the tourism season, cut road deaths and help promote outdoor activities.

Debate over the change, which would see British clocks synchronized with those in continental Europe, has rumbled for years and seen repeated attempts by legislators to press forward the case for reform.

However, opponents insist that northern regions would be badly affected, with darker mornings across northern England and Scotland. Some critics claim that the sunrise in Scotland could come as late as 10 a.m. during some winter months.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, speaking during a visit to Australia, said he continued to be interested in the idea of changing the country's time zone ? but stressed that semiautonomous authorities in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would need to agree.

"Discussions are under way across Whitehall and with the devolved authorities but that's the key, you can only do this if there is real national consensus and pressure between all the nations of our United Kingdom," Cameron said.

Clocks in Britain go forward by one hour in the spring when daylight savings time takes effect and are turned back in the fall, a regime adopted in 1916 and known as British summer time.

During World War II, summer time was set two hours ahead, and the country has previously experimented with year-round summer time from Feb. 18, 1968, to Oct. 31, 1971, drawing protests in Scotland.

Scottish Nation Party lawmaker Angus MacNeil said that northern parts of Britain would likely oppose any changes. Any reform "would have massive implications for the safety and well-being of everyone living north of Manchester," MacNeil said, referring to the city in northwestern England.

Some Fixes for the iPhone 4S Battery Drain (The Atlantic Wire)

A few weeks with the new phone under their belt, some new iPhone 4S users have figured out why the phone's battery?might?be draining too fast and found some fixes that?mostly?work.?The new phone is mostly?rad, but?all of those fancy phone features are an energy suck. While the iPhone 4S's battery life has some improvement for talk time, data and WiFi usage are less efficient, reports Geeky Gadgets. But it turns out, the phone is having bigger battery issues than that, with over a thousand upset iPhone owners taking to the Apple Forums, complaining of battery-drainage. They're not perfect, but they have some ideas to fix the problem that are the best iPhoners have for now.

Related: Xbox TV Can Put TV on Your TV Again

iCloud Syncing

The problem: One of the cooler iOS 5 features was the iCloud integration. The 4S, and really any device with the updated iOS, syncs iTunes, iWork and Photos up to the cloud. It's pretty cool, but apparently drains batter life, reports MacWorld's Christopher Breen. He noted that his phone dropped a battery percentage point every couple of minutes. That's very fast for a phone that's supposed to have up to 200 hours of standby time. After doing a little investigation, Breen deduced the problem had something to do with the iCloud sync up, which was stuck in a perpetual sync. "The iPhone appeared to be in a crashing loop ... And this was killing the battery," he explains.?

Related: A More Personalized Streamer with Google TV 2.0

The fix: Wipe the phone and resync it to iCloud. At least that's how Breen fixed things up. "On restart I chose to set it up as a new phone rather than pulling a backup from my Mac or iCloud," he writes. "When the time came, I switched on contact syncing within the iCloud screen and fired up System Activity Monitor."?

Related: What Killed the Google TV?

Setting Time Zone

The Problem: Another possible issues that iDownload Bug's Oliver Haslam diagnosed comes from a bug that causes the Setting Time Zone function to constantly track the user's location.?

Related: Apple TV Could Be Tim Cook's Downfall

The fix: Turn that setting off. To do this, go to System Services, which is under Location Services, under Settings and toggle "Setting Time Zone" off. It's not exactly a perfect fix, because it disables that feature, meaning the iPhone will no longer automatically reset the time zone as it travels. And if one forgets to do that it could lead to an alarm clock disaster. But, it's a price to pay for longer battery life. Haslam's fixed increased usage life by 3 hours and standby time by 15 hours.?

Reminders

The Problem: Another nifty add on that comes with the new phone is Reminders, which true to its name, works with Siri to set-up reminders for things we'd otherwise forget. A really tight part of Reminders is that a location can trigger a reminder. "Stop at the liquor store on the way home from the reunion," for example. To know when to send out the reminder, this the phone constantly checks GPS, thus sucking the living daylights out of your phone.

The Fix:?Chill out on the location-based reminders. It's not an ideal fix, but priorities, right??

Church creates 'Judgement House' as alternative to Halloween haunts

--?

Life is full of choices, and each choice has its consequences.

That is the message presented just before Halloween at Hope Community Church in Hudson, Ohio.

"Our goal is to portray a real-life story about real people who make real choices about what they're going to do about Christ," said the Rev. Jeff Schofield, co-lead pastor at Hope Community. "The Bible tells us that we will all stand before the Lord in judgment and what happens there will be based on the decisions we made in life. We want to encourage people to choose a relationship with Christ."

The evangelization tool Schofield and his congregation are using is a live, walk-through drama called Judgement House. During the presentation, which is similar to a haunted house, a guide leads small groups from scene to scene as the story of a family, with two teen children, unfolds.

More than 250 church members have been planning since spring to pull together the 35-minute walk-through drama that starts in a tent off the church parking lot, moves through eight scenes in the lower level of the church and ends in the sanctuary, where counselors are available to talk with people about the drama and Christianity.

Angela Condo, who coordinates the volunteers for the drama, said the massive effort that goes into transforming the church into a theatrical production is worth it.

"It's awe-inspiring to see the impact that it has on the lives of people who come through," said Condo, of Streetsboro. "For me, it's personal because both my dad and stepmom became believers in Christ through Judgement House."

The goal of the local church is to attract nonbelievers to Judgement House as an alternative to the haunted houses that are offered at this time of year. But, unlike the Halloween thrillers, Judgement House does not intend to scare people.

"We're not trying to make people wet their pants of have a heart attack. It's not our heart to scare people into a relationship with Christ," Schofield said. "We just want to present what the Bible teaches about life after death in a compelling way."

Judgement House, which was founded in 1983 by a student minister in Moody, Ala., is now a nonprofit organization known as New Creation Evangelism Inc. Since its incorporation in 1988, Judgement House has been presented in 34 states and seven countries abroad. According to information on its website (www.judgementhouse.org), 3.9 million people have experienced Judgement House and 390,000 have made a first-time profession of faith in Christ.

This is the 10th year the local church has presented Judgement House, which attracted 6,000 people last year. Each year, the message "What will you do with God's offer of a saving and personal relationship with Jesus Christ?" is the same but the story, or script, changes. This year's theme of the presentation at Hope Community Church is "Where There's Smoke, There's Fire."

It centers around two teens involved in a house fire.

Todd Kowalcyk, who directs the production, adapted the script (supplied by Judgement House) for the local church.

"We are trying to make sure the gospel message is clear and concise," said Kowalcyk, of Streetsboro. "As far as I'm concerned, God takes care of the message and we take care of the show. It's all about spreading the gospel."

Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 330-655-2975 or by going to www.hopecma.org and clicking on the Judgement House link.

The Protestant, evangelical church, founded in 1992, is part of the Christian Missionary Alliance. It attracts about 600 people to its 9:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday worship services.

The Rev. Jerry Witt, founding pastor, said Judgement House is an example of the congregation's commitment to do whatever it takes to lead people to Christ.

"When people walk away from Judgement House, we want them to look at the reality of life after death and to have seen the love of God through his son, Jesus Christ," Witt said. "We do this as a gift to others because we want to share the love of God. And the added bonus is that it really draws the people in our church together."

Oakland police action unnerves some protesters (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? The display of police force in Oakland, Calif., and Atlanta has unnerved some anti-Wall Street protesters.

While demonstrators in other cities have built a working relationship with police and city leaders, they wondered on Wednesday how long the good spirit would last and whether they could be next.

Will they have to face riot gear-clad officers and tear gas that their counterparts in Oakland, Calif. faced on Tuesday? Or will they be handcuffed and hauled away in the middle of the night like protesters in Atlanta?

"Yes, we're afraid. Is this the night they're going to sneak in?" said activist William Buster of Occupy Wall Street, where the movement began last month to protest what they see as corporate greed.

"Is this the night they might use unreasonable force?" he asked.

The message, meanwhile, from officials in cities where other encampments have sprung up was simple: We'll keep working with you. Just respect your neighbors and keep the camps clean and safe.

Business owners and residents have complained in recent weeks about assaults, drunken fights and sanitation problems. Officials are trying to balance their rights and uphold the law while honoring protesters' free speech rights.

"I understand the frustration the protesters feel ... about inequity in our country as well as Wall Street greed," Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said. "I support their right to free speech but we also have rules and laws."

Some cities, such as Providence, R.I., are moving ahead with plans to evict activists. But from Tampa, Fla., to Boston, police and city leaders say they will continue to try to work with protesters to address problems in the camps.

In Oakland, officials initially supported the protests, with Mayor Jean Quan saying that sometimes "democracy is messy."

But tensions reached a boiling point after a sexual assault, a severe beating and a fire were reported and paramedics were denied access to the camp, according to city officials. They also cited concerns about rats, fire hazards and public urination.

Demonstrators disputed the city's claims, saying that volunteers collect garbage and recycling every six hours, that water is boiled before being used to wash dishes and that rats have long infested the park.

When riot gear-clad police moved in early Tuesday, they were pelted with rocks, bottles and utensils from people in the camp's kitchen area. They emptied the camp near city hall of people, and barricaded the plaza.

Protesters were taken away in plastic handcuffs, most of them arrested on suspicion of illegal lodging.

Demonstrators returned later in the day to march and retake the plaza. They were met by police officers in riot gear. Several small skirmishes broke out and officers cleared the area by firing tear gas.

The scene repeated itself several times just a few blocks away in front of the plaza.

Tensions would build as protesters edged ever closer to the police line and reach a breaking point with a demonstrator hurling a bottle or rock, prompting police to respond with another round of gas.

The chemical haze hung in the air for hours, new blasts clouding the air before the previous fog could dissipate.

The number of protesters diminished with each round of tear gas. Police estimated that there were roughly 1,000 demonstrators at the first clash following the march. Nearly 100 were arrested.

Among demonstrators injured was Scott Olsen, a 24-year-old Marine veteran who served two tours in Iraq.

Dottie Guy, of the Iraq Veterans Against the War, a veterans advocacy group, said Olsen was hit by a projectile while marching toward city hall and suffered a fractured skull. A hospital spokesman said Olsen was in critical condition.

Demonstrators planned to try again on Wednesday night to march, and could clash again with police.

In Atlanta, police in riot gear and SWAT teams arrested 53 people in Woodruff Park, many of whom had camped out there for weeks as part of a widespread movement that is protesting the wealth disparity between the rich and everyone else.

Mayor Kasim Reed had been supportive of the protests, twice issuing an executive order allowing them to remain.

Reed said on Wednesday that he had no choice to arrest them because he believed things were headed in a direction that was no longer peaceful. He cited a man seen walking the park with an AK-47 assault rifle.

"There were some who wanted to continue along the peaceful lines, and some who thought that their path should be more radical," Reed said. "As mayor, I couldn't wait for them to finish that debate."

Reed said authorities could not determine whether the rifle was loaded, and were unable to get additional information.

An Associated Press reporter talked to the man with the gun earlier Tuesday.

He wouldn't give his name ? identifying himself only as "Porch," an out-of-work accountant who doesn't agree with the protesters' views ? but said that he was there, armed, because he wanted to protect the rights of people to protest.

People who were arrested trickled out of jail as a crowd of several dozen supporters chanted "freedom" as they left.

"I think Mayor Reed would do well to learn quickly that you cannot intimidate, you cannot threaten, you cannot jail something whose time has come," activist Derrick Boazman said. "The fact of the matter is this movement's time has come."

In Portland, Ore., the protest seems to be at a crossroads. Organizers have been dealing with public drunkenness, fighting and drug abuse for weeks, especially among the homeless who are also in the camp.

Some are floating the idea of relocating it, possibly indoors. Others see that as capitulation.

"I don't know if it would be a good idea. Part of the effectiveness of what's going on here is visibility," protester Justin Neff said. "Though I'd do it if there's a possibility that we'd get seen and noticed. I don't know how that would work indoors."

City officials haven't said what would cause them to forcibly evict the protesters. They said they evaluate the camp daily.

In Baltimore, protesters like Casey McKeel, a member of Occupy Baltimore's legal committee, said he wasn't sure aren't sure what to expect from city officials, noting that some cities have arrested protesters in recent weeks.

"Across the country we're seeing a wide range of reactions," he said. "For now we're hoping the city will work with us."

The mayor, Rawlings-Blake, said she is willing to work with them, but they should realize that they are camping out in a city park and that was not its intended use. She said their free-speech rights don't trump the public's right to enjoy the space.

"I have absolutely no interest in a violent exchange," she said. "We want to work with the protesters, but the point is to talk about inequity and talk about how we can work together to have a more just society or more equitable Baltimore.

"It's not about pitching a tent. It's about getting the work done," she said.

Parents who joke and pretend with their toddlers are giving their children a head start in terms of life skills. Most parents are naturals at playing the fool with their kids, says a new research project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). However parents who feel they may need a little help in doing this can learn to develop these life skills with their tots.

"Parents, carers and early years educators shouldn't underestimate the importance of interacting with young children through jokes and pretending," researcher Dr Elena Hoicka points out. "Spending time doing this fun stuff with kids helps them learn how to do it themselves and gives them a set of skills which are important in childhood and beyond."

The latest research findings on joking and pretending with children will be highlighted at a half-day event organised as part of the ESRC's Festival of Social Science 2011. One key aim of the event will be to boost parents' confidence in joking and pretending with their toddlers through a range of hands-on activities.

Dr Hoicka's study has examined how the two very similar concepts of joking and pretending develop in children aged between 15 and 24 months. Explaining the difference between joking and pretending, Dr Hoicka says: "Both involve intentionally doing or saying the wrong thing. However, joking is about doing something wrong just for the sake of it. In contrast, pretending is about doing something wrong which is imagined to be right. For example, parents might use a sponge like a duck while pretending but use a cat as a duck when joking."

The study examined whether parents offer different cues such as tone or pitch of voice in order to help their toddlers understand and differentiate between joking and pretending. Findings reveal that parents rely on a range of language styles, sound and non-verbal cues. For example, when pretending, parents often talk slowly and loudly and repeat their actions. Conversely, parents tend to cue their children to jokes by showing their disbelief through language, and using a more excited tone of voice.

"We found that most parents employ these different cues quite naturally to help their toddlers understand and differentiate these concepts," Dr Hoicka points out. "While not all parents feel confident in their natural abilities, the research does show that making the effort to interact in this way with toddlers is important. Knowing how to joke is great for making friends, dealing with stress, thinking creatively and learning to 'think outside the box'. Pretending helps children learn about the world, interact with others, be creative and solve problems."

Parents can learn more about the different cues used in joking and pretending during an event to be held next week. "We will be offering a range of activities to help parents experiment with joking and pretending," says Dr Hoicka. "We will also give some short talks on the early development of joking and pretending in toddlers as well as some initial findings from our research project."

NY hotel maid: Strauss-Kahn doesn't have immunity (AP)

NEW YORK ? Attorneys for a New York City hotel maid who contends she was sexually assaulted by former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn say he doesn't have immunity from a civil lawsuit filed against him.

The lawyers quote the IMF and the U.S. Department of State as saying Strauss-Kahn wasn't immune in the days after the May encounter at the Sofitel hotel in Manhattan.

According to the papers filed Monday by attorney Douglas Wigdor, the Department of State wrote: "The IMF is not seeking to assert any immunities on behalf of Dominique Strauss-Kahn. But our understanding is that immunity in this particular case and with IMF officials is that it would only involve their official capacity and carrying out their duties in their official role. And that doesn't apply in this case."

Strauss-Kahn initially was charged with attempted rape after the maid said he attacked her in his hotel suite and forced her to perform oral sex. The criminal case was dismissed when prosecutors said they had lost faith in her credibility after a series of lies she told them unrelated to the assault allegations.

The maid filed the civil complaint against the one-time French presidential contender when the criminal case was still active.

Strauss-Kahn argued last month that the civil case, pending in the Bronx, should be dismissed because he had diplomatic immunity. His lawyers argued he should be immune under international law even though he had already resigned his post as leader of the IMF when the lawsuit was filed. They said his immunity stood until he left the United States, shortly after his criminal case was dismissed.

Attorneys for the maid, Guinean immigrant Nafissatou Diallo, said the suggestion Strauss-Kahn had immunity was "a transparent attempt to delay these proceedings and should be denied in its entirety as utterly meritless and frivolous." If he had any immunity at all, they argued, he forfeited it when he resigned.

An IMF quote on the issue echoed the Department of State, saying his immunities were limited and not applicable to this case.

Attorneys for Diallo, who came forward publicly in a series of interviews, filed the lawsuit against Strauss-Kahn on Aug. 8. The motion filed Monday reiterated in graphic detail her version of their encounter. The lawsuit doesn't ask for specific damages.

There is a lower burden of proof in civil cases, and it is possible that Strauss-Kahn would have to testify if the maid's case went to trial.

Strauss-Kahn, who's married, has admitted what he called an inappropriate sexual encounter with the chambermaid, calling it a "moral failing" that he deeply regrets but insisting there was no violence.

A writer's case against Strauss-Kahn in Paris also was dropped this month. French prosecutors said that while he may have done something that qualifies as sexual assault they couldn't send him to trial because it happened too long ago. Strauss-Kahn called the writer's claim imaginary.

Defense in Jackson case opens with doctor, police

(AP) ? Defense attorneys for the doctor accused of killing Michael Jackson began their case Monday, targeting Jackson as the architect of his own demise by seeking to cure his insomnia with an intravenous drug, even when he was warned it was dangerous.

With the testimony of a doctor and a nurse practitioner, the lawyers showed that Jackson had been on his quest for at least 15 years, and in the months before he died he began asking for intravenous medication, specifically an anesthetic.

Jackson would eventually get the drug propofol from Dr. Conrad Murray, now on trial for involuntary manslaughter in the death of the superstar.

Taking over in the packed courtroom after prosecutors rested their four-week case, defense lawyers showed their hand at last, calling witnesses who indicated it was Jackson who demanded the drug that eventually killed him.

Dr. Allan Metzger, who was Jackson's friend and confidant over two decades, said he refused the singer's request for an intravenous anesthetic two months before his death and told the star it would be dangerous if administered in his home.

Prosecutors were quick to exploit the testimony to show that other medical professionals rejected any suggestion by the singer that he receive anesthetics as a sleep aid.

"You explained to him that it was dangerous, life-threatening and should not be done outside a hospital, correct?" prosecutor David Walgren asked on cross-examination.

"That's correct," Metzger replied.

Metzger added that there was no amount of money that would have prompted him to give Jackson the anesthetic propofol,

The next witness, holistic nurse practitioner Cherilyn Lee, said she treated Jackson with vitamin infusions and he felt so much better that he invited her to go with him to London for his concert tour. Then he reported he couldn't sleep and asked her to come to his home and watch him sleep, she testified.

She said she thought his problem was that he had been drinking highly caffeinated beverages for energy. Once he withdrew from them, she was confident his problem would abate. But it did not.

She said she urged him to undergo a sleep study but he said he didn't have time.

In mid-April 2009, shortly before he began treatment with Murray, Jackson asked Lee to watch him sleep, which she did. She said he slept for five hours but was upset when he awoke.

"He said, 'You see, I can't stay asleep,'" she said.

Lee, who has spoken publicly about Jackson's demand that she get him propofol, was expected to tell jurors about that exchange when she returns to the witness stand Tuesday.

Metzger also said he had known for at least 15 years that Jackson had trouble sleeping. When he made a house call to the singer's home in April 2009, Metzger said the singer asked him about intravenous sleep medications and anesthetics. He mentioned a specific drug that he wanted, Metzger said.

"I think he used the word juice," Metzger said. The physician prescribed two oral medications, although he said the singer told him that he did not believe any oral medication would work.

Metzger added that there was no amount of money that would have prompted him to give Jackson the anesthetic propofol, which he said the singer didn't mention by name during their visit.

Murray has pleaded not guilty. Authorities contend Murray gave Jackson a lethal dose of propofol as a sleep aid.

Metzger was one of several hostile witnesses that defense attorneys plan to call during their case, which began with brief testimony from a records custodian for the police emergency dispatcher, a police surveillance specialist and two detectives who investigated Murray.

Defense lawyers have said they will have 15 witnesses but have not publicly revealed whether they will call Murray to testify.

Jurors have heard from Murray through a more than two-hour interview with police, and it seems unlikely his attorneys would subject their client to what would be blistering questioning from prosecutors.

Prosecutors rested their case earlier in the day after testimony from 33 witnesses.

The defense then began its effort to counter damaging testimony that cast Murray as an opportunistic doctor who broke legal, ethical and professional guidelines to satisfy a patient who was paying him $150,000 a month.

Review: I-Wayne brings 'Life Teachings' on new CD (AP)

?I-Wayne, "Life Teachings" (VP Records)

"Life Teachings" is the long overdue third album from reggae star I-Wayne, and the singer is back with a display of real roots, continuing to mix the political with the romantic.

The 14-track album, mostly produced by Patrick Z. Henry, takes you on a journey of love and righteousness, and is filled with rhythms and bass lines that blend perfectly with his incredible voice.?

Album opener "Burn Down Sodom" is bold and self-explanatory, and the powerful title track touches on common roots matters such as taking down Babylon, and "Herb Fi Legalize" does the same praising marijuana.

In comparison, tracks such as "Life Joy," a collaboration with Etana, gives the record an element of R&B, and "Empress Divine" adores the "perfect woman," showcasing I-Wayne's romantic side.

The album wouldn't be complete without an infusion of dancehall and that comes courtesy of "The Fire Song," featuring special guest Assassin, whose rough tone compliments I-Wayne's softness.

Overall, "Life Teachings" is one of the better contemporary reggae albums to be heard in a while, and out of his trio of records, this one is by far the strongest, with its fearless songwriting and neat production. Comparisons to reggae greats are certain, but not premature. Old and new listeners alike should be excited.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: An instant pick on this classic is "Pure as the Nile" ? a simple, feel good song with a powerful captivating vibe.

"Three Musketeers" gives swashbuckling a bad name (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? The creators of the umpteenth new adaptation of "The Three Musketeers" decided that the classic novel really needed a giant blimp battle, high-tech booby traps, bird droppings, "Matrix"-esque slo-mo fight scenes and scads of computer-generated French soldiers.

We should, perhaps, admire their restraint at not throwing in a rapping grandma' and a wise-cracking chimp, but it's hard to give any credit to a movie that's this utterly pointless, humorless, charmless and needless.

I'm pretty sure I wasn't supposed to be wishing for the death of D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman) at the hands of the evil Rochefort (Mads Mikkelsen) during their climactic rooftop battle. But then, I'm also pretty sure that I wasn't supposed to be wishing that I were instead watching "Hudson Hawk," a movie that seems downright restrained and narratively focused next to this one.

The basic "Musketeers" story elements are in place: Country hick D'Artagnan comes to Paris to fight alongside Athos (Matthew Macfayden), Porthos (Ray Stevenson) and Aramis (Luke Evans), who have seen better days the trio is beholden to young, stupid King Louis XIII (Freddie Fox), but the real power in France is the devious Cardinal Richelieu (Christoph Waltz), who has plans to plunge the nation into a war with England so that he may seize the throne.

But in the same way that Robert Zemeckis decided that "A Christmas Carol" was lacking a carriage chase with a teeny-tiny Scrooge, or that the makers of last year's "Gulliver's Travels" realized that the Jonathan Swift classic was achingly devoid of a giant robot, hack director Paul W.S. Anderson ("Resident Evil," "AVP: Alien vs. Predator") stuffs the screen with Indiana Jones-style deathtraps and enormous, DaVinci-inspired airships.

Look, just because people have been reading and loving Alexandre Dumas' novel for more than 160 years, why not bloat it with needless stuntwork and special effect gimcrackery? Rip off "Pirates of the Caribbean" to your heart's content, filmmakers, but leave poor Dumas out of it.

Of course, it's not just the 19th century French author who bears the brunt of the abuse here the cast is unanimously ill-served by the material. Let's start with the vapid, mush-mouthed Logan Lerman, who's more Mousketeer than Musketeer. His shaggy-haired, surfer-dude demeanor would be perfect for a Disney Channel "Dogtown and Z-Boys" sitcom, but it's jarringly out of place here.

Macfayden's Athos is meant to be cynical and disappointed after his betrayal at the hands of Milady DeWinter -- played by Milla Jovovich, and more on her in a second -- but the emotion he tends to convey is what the young people call "butt-hurt." As for Jovovich, she's trying to be terribly, terribly wicked (and also a wall-crawling superspy in a bustle), but her performance finds a hitherto unknown middle ground between Divine in "Pink Flamingos" and Halle Berry in "Catwoman" that's just embarrassing.

Milady's exaggerated dresses wear the actress, and not vice versa, an affliction that also befalls Jovovich's "Dirty Girl" co-star Juno Temple, here reduced to a squeaky-voiced cipher as Queen Anne.

Waltz apparently took on the role of Richelieu to prove that Supporting Actor Oscar winners are indeed cursed -- charming evil was his forte in "Inglourious Basterds," but in "The Three Musketeers" he's just phoning in some warmed-over Snidely Whiplash. Not that his hammy villainy can compete with the insanely over-the-top antics of Orlando Bloom as Lord Buckingham, who camps it up like he's playing Captain Hook in one of those Christmastime British panto plays.

I weep for those who will have their first exposure to this material by way of this bloated, moronic mess of a movie. Pick up the book, rent the unparalleled 1973 Richard Lester version -- heck, even the old Classics Illustrated comic-book leaves this thing in the dust.

On its own demerits, "The Three Musketeers" is a soul-draining experience, but as an adaptation of one of the definitive tales of derring-do, it's an argument against letting novels go into the public domain.

(This story was corrected to fix typo in Musketeers in headline)

Perfectly Flawed

Let?s start with what it doesn?t mean. We?re not talking about villains, whom readers are invited to revile with relish?who are deliciously unattractive on purpose. Neither are we talking about the anti-hero: a protagonist the author has clearly portrayed as malign but for whom, curiously, we root anyway. An endearing mobster, Tony Soprano is an archetypal anti-hero. Ditto Calvin Piper in my fourth novel Game Control?a renegade demographer whose modest proposal to solve human overpopulation by killing two billion people overnight makes the man and his festive misanthropy no less beguiling. Anti-heroes aren?t actually unattractive?literarily, they function exactly like heroes?but morally they shouldn?t be attractive. We feel a little guilty about cheering them on, which is part of the pleasure, that daring little dance on the dark side.

Clinton: Pakistan must boost anti-terror fight

(AP Photo/Kevin Lamarque, Pool)

(AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday demanded that Pakistan step up the fight against terrorists within its borders, delivering a blunt message that Pakistanis "must be part of the solution" to the ongoing conflict in neighboring Afghanistan.

Using unusually stern language, Clinton said while visiting the Afghan capital of Kabul that the Obama administration expects the Pakistani government, military and intelligence services to "take the lead" in not only fighting insurgents based in Pakistan but also in encouraging Afghan militants to reconcile with Afghan society.

"We intend to push Pakistan very hard," Clinton told a joint news conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Clinton will travel to Pakistan later Thursday to deliver the message wrapped in a new formula called "fight, talk, build" that aims to kill unrepentant insurgents, convince those willing to accept certain principles to make peace, and rehabilitate Afghanistan and integrate it back into the region.

"Our message (to Pakistan) is very clear," she said. "We're going to be fighting, we are going to be talking and we are going to be building ... and they can either be helping or hindering, but we are not going to stop."

Clinton, who will be leading an extraordinarily high-level U.S. delegation to Islamabad to make that case, said it was imperative for the U.S., Afghanistan and Pakistan to cooperate. But she said Pakistan bears much of the responsibility.

"We must send a clear, unequivocal message to the government and people of Pakistan that they must be part of the solution, and that means ridding their own country of terrorists who kill their own people and who cross the border to kill people in Afghanistan," she said.

Clinton noted that U.S. and Afghan forces had recently launched a joint operation against safe havens in Afghanistan used by the Taliban-allied, Pakistan-based Haqqani network. She said the U.S. "would show" Pakistan how to eliminate Haqqani safe havens on Pakistani soil.

"We have to deal with the safe havens on both sides of the borders," she said, adding later: "No one should be in any way mistaken about allowing (attacks) to continue without paying a very big price."

The U.S. sees a political settlement with the Taliban as key to ending the war and is pushing Karzai to lead and expand a reconciliation drive, although the Taliban has indicated no public interest in such a deal. A secret U.S. effort to spark negotiations earlier this year angered Karzai, although he had nothing but kind words of welcome for Clinton.

"Reconciliation is possible," she said. "Indeed, it represents the best hope for Afghanistan and the region."

Clinton's tough comments come as Karzai has expressed frustration with his attempts to woo Taliban fighters away from the insurgency amid increasing attacks by the Haqqani network and the murder last month of elder statesman Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was leading the outreach. Rabbani was killed when he greeted a suicide bomber posing as a Taliban emissary bearing a reconciliation message.

Karzai said Rabbani's assassination made it clear that Pakistan must be on board and involved in reconciliation efforts.

"It brought us to the point where we felt that those who come to talk to us on behalf of the Taliban actually represent assassinations and killings and not a peace process, and therefore the focus of the peace process, we felt, would serve a better purpose taken to Pakistan," Karzai said as Clinton stood beside him in the garden of the presidential palace.

"We believe that the Taliban, to a very, very great extent ? a very, very great extent ? are controlled by establishments in Pakistan, stay in Pakistan, have their headquarters in Pakistan and launch operations from Pakistan," he said. Therefore, he said, the proper "authority" and "venue" for any peace talks is Pakistan.

Clinton was clearly sympathetic to his argument.

"This is a time for clarity, it is a time for people to declare themselves as to how we are going to work together," she said, referring to Pakistan.

In Islamabad later Thursday, Clinton will be meeting up with CIA chief David Petraeus and the nation's top military official, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey, for talks with senior Pakistani officials.

Their presence will be a muscular show of diplomatic force that several officials described as a combined message of support and pressure.

Google accidentally shows off Gmail's new design

By Rosa Golijan

Some of the design changes Google plans on making to Gmail were revealed when a video was inadvertently?posted to the search engine giant's official YouTube account on Thursday. The video was quickly removed, but not before some folks managed to make and re-upload copies of it.

The video?? a copy of which you can see below thanks to a YouTube user named "crlsndrsjmnz"?? shows that the new Gmail design offers a lot of customization options including the ability to alter how densely conversations are grouped and how much space some elements (such as the chat list or labels menu) may take up. The new design?also brings an entirely revamped conversation view which almost resembles Facebook Messages by adding a senders' photos next to each email.

There are no solid details regarding when this redesign will occur, but ??as?Google representative Andrea Freund explained to CNET?after clarifying?that the public wasn't "supposed to see" the video below just yet?? there will be "more info on Gmail's new look soon."

It's worth noting that the accidentally posted video suggests that the redesign will be rolled out gradually over the course of several months whenever it is made public.

Pulled from drain pipe, Gadhafi was shown no mercy (AP)

SIRTE, Libya ? Dragged from hiding in a drainage pipe, a wounded Moammar Gadhafi raised his hands and begged revolutionary fighters: "Don't kill me, my sons." Within an hour, he was dead, but not before jubilant Libyans had vented decades of hatred by pulling the eccentric dictator's hair and parading his bloodied body on the hood of a truck.

The death Thursday of Gadhafi, two months after he was driven from power and into hiding, decisively buries the nearly 42-year regime that had turned the oil-rich country into an international pariah and his own personal fiefdom.

It also thrusts Libya into a new age in which its transitional leaders must overcome deep divisions and rebuild nearly all its institutions from scratch to achieve dreams of democracy.

"We have been waiting for this historic moment for a long time. Moammar Gadhafi has been killed," Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril said in the capital of Tripoli. "I would like to call on Libyans to put aside the grudges and only say one word, which is Libya, Libya, Libya."

President Barack Obama told the Libyan people: "You have won your revolution."

Although the U.S. briefly led the relentless NATO bombing campaign that sealed Gadhafi's fate, Washington later took a secondary role to its allies. Britain and France said they hoped that his death would lead to a more democratic Libya.

Other leaders have fallen in the Arab Spring uprisings, but the 69-year-old Gadhafi is the first to be killed. He was shot to death in his hometown of Sirte, where revolutionary fighters overwhelmed the last of his loyalist supporters Thursday after weeks of heavy battles.

Also killed in the city was one of his feared sons, Muatassim, while another son ? one-time heir apparent Seif al-Islam ? was wounded and captured. An AP reporter saw cigarette burns on Muatassim's body.

Bloody images of Gadhafi's last moments raised questions over how exactly he died after he was captured wounded, but alive. Video on Arab television stations showed a crowd of fighters shoving and pulling the goateed, balding Gadhafi, with blood splattered on his face and soaking his shirt.

Gadhafi struggled against them, stumbling and shouting as the fighters pushed him onto the hood of a pickup truck. One fighter held him down, pressing on his thigh with a pair of shoes in a show of contempt.

Fighters propped him on the hood as they drive for several moments, apparently to parade him around in victory.

"We want him alive. We want him alive," one man shouted before Gadhafi was dragged off the hood, some fighters pulling his hair, toward an ambulance.

Later footage showed fighters rolling Gadhafi's lifeless body over on the pavement, stripped to the waist and a pool of blood under his head. His body was then paraded on a car through Misrata, a nearby city that suffered a brutal siege by regime forces during the eight-month civil war that eventually ousted Gadhafi. Crowds in the streets cheered, "The blood of martyrs will not go in vain."

Thunderous celebratory gunfire and cries of "God is great" rang out across Tripoli well past midnight, leaving the smell of sulfur in the air. People wrapped revolutionary flags around toddlers and flashed V for victory signs as they leaned out car windows. Martyrs' Square, the former Green Square from which Gadhafi made many defiant speeches, was packed with revelers.

In Sirte, the ecstatic former rebels celebrated the city's fall after weeks of fighting by firing endless rounds into the sky, pumping their guns, knives and even a meat cleaver in the air and singing the national anthem.

The outpouring of joy reflected the deep hatred of a leader who had brutally warped Libya with his idiosyncratic rule. After seizing power in a 1969 coup that toppled the monarchy, Gadhafi created a "revolutionary" system of "rule by the masses," which supposedly meant every citizen participated in government but really meant all power was in his hands. He wielded it erratically, imposing random rules while crushing opponents, often hanging anyone who plotted against him in public squares.

Abroad, Gadhafi posed as a Third World leader, while funding militants, terror groups and guerrilla armies. His regime was blamed in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland and the downing of a French passenger get in Africa the following year, as well as the 1986 bombing of a German discotheque frequented by U.S. servicemen that killed three people.

The day began with revolutionary forces bearing down on the last of Gadhafi's heavily armed loyalists who in recent days had been squeezed into a block of buildings of about 700 square yards.

A large convoy of vehicles moved out of the buildings, and revolutionary forces moved to intercept it, said Fathi Bashagha, spokesman for the Misrata Military Council, which commanded the fighters who captured him. At 8:30 a.m., NATO warplanes struck the convoy, a hit that stopped it from escaping, according to French Defense Minister Gerard Longuet.

Fighters then clashed with loyalists in the convoy for three hours, with rocket-propelled grenades, anti-aircraft weapons and machine guns. Members of the convoy got out of the vehicles, Bashagha said.

Gadhafi and other supporters fled on foot, with fighters in pursuit, he said. A Gadhafi bodyguard captured as they ran away gave a similar account to Arab TV stations.

Gadhafi and several bodyguards took refuge in a drainage pipe under a highway nearby. After clashes ensued, Gadhafi emerged, telling the fighters outside, "What do you want? Don't kill me, my sons," according to Bashagha and Hassan Doua, a fighter who was among those who captured him.

Bashagha said Gadhafi died in the ambulance from wounds suffered during the clashes. Abdel-Jalil Abdel-Aziz, a doctor who accompanied the body in the ambulance during the 120-mile drive to Misrata, said Gadhafi died from two bullet wounds ? to the head and chest.

A government account of Gadhafi's death said he was captured unharmed and later was mortally wounded in the crossfire from both sides.

Amnesty International urged the revolutionary fighters to give a complete report, saying it was essential to conduct "a full, independent and impartial inquiry to establish the circumstances of Col. Gadhafi's death."

The TV images of Gadhafi's bloodied body sent ripples across the Arab world and on social networks such as Twitter.

Many wondered whether a similar fate awaits Syria's Bashar Assad and Yemen's Ali Abdullah Saleh, two leaders clinging to power in the face of long-running Arab Spring uprisings. For the millions of Arabs yearning for freedom, democracy and new leadership, the death of one of the region's most brutal dictators will likely inspire and invigorate the movement for change.

As word spread of Gadhafi's death, jubilant Libyans poured into Tripoli's central Martyr's Square, chanting "Syria! Syria!" ? urging the Syrian opposition on to victory.

"This will signal the death of the idea that Arab leaders are invincible," said Egyptian activist and blogger Hossam Hamalawi. "Mubarak is in a cage, Ben Ali ran away, and now Gadhafi killed. ... All this will bring down the red line that we can't get these guys."

Thursday's final blows to the Gadhafi regime allow Libya's interim leadership, the National Transitional Council, to declare the entire country liberated.

It rules out a scenario some had feared ? that Gadhafi might flee into Libya's southern deserts and lead a resistance campaign. Following the fall of Tripoli on Aug. 21, Gadhafi loyalists mounted fierce resistance in several areas, including Sirte, preventing the new leadership from declaring full victory. Earlier this week, revolutionary fighters gained control of one stronghold, Bani Walid.

Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam told AP that Muatassim Gadhafi was killed in Sirte. Abdel-Aziz, the doctor who accompanied Gadhafi's body in the ambulance, said Muatassim was shot in the chest. Also killed was Gadhafi's Defense Minister Abu Bakr Younis.

Justice Minister Mohammed al-Alagi said Seif al-Islam Gadhafi had been wounded in the leg and was being held in a hospital in the city of Zlitan, northwest of Sirte. Shammam said Seif was captured in Sirte, but the senior NTC leadership did not immediately confirm.

The National Council will declare liberation on Saturday, Mohamed Sayeh, a senior council member, said. That begins a key timetable toward creating a new system: The NTC has always said it will form a new interim government within a month of liberation and will hold elections within eight months.

But the revolutionary forces are an unruly mix of militias from Libya's major cities, and already differences have emerged between them. Revolutionaries from Tripoli, Misrata and Benghazi ? Libya's second-largest city that has served as the rebel capital during the civil war ? have exchanged accusations that each is trying to dominate the new rule.

Also, Islamic fundamentalists have taken an increasingly prominent role, pushing for some form of Islamic state in Libya, causing friction with more secular leaders.

"Libyans aim for multiparty politics, justice, democracy and freedom," said Libyan Defense Minister Jalal al-Degheili. "The end of Gadhafi is not the aim, we say the minor struggle is over. The bigger struggle is now coming. This will not happen unless all the Libyan people are ... united."

Olympus ex-CEO urges Japan watchdog probe (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Ousted Olympus Corp. (7733.T) CEO Michael Woodford widened his bid for regulators to probe the endoscope maker's controversial payments to advisory firms by urging Japan's securities watchdog to investigate.

The deepening scandal prompted investors to sell Olympus's shares for a fifth straight day on Thursday and a Japanese ratings agency said it might downgrade the company's credit rating.

Olympus has lost close to half its market value in a matter of days, raising speculation it could become a takeover target.

The chief executive turned whistleblower told Reuters on Wednesday he had sent a letter to Japan's Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission (SESC) to look into the abnormally high fees involved in Olympus's $2.2 billion acquisition of British medical equipment maker Gyrus in 2008.

Woodford, who was dismissed just two weeks into the job, took his case to British fraud investigators earlier this week since most of the Gyrus deal was paid for through an Olympus subsidiary in the UK.

The fees, equal to a third of the acquisition price, is stratospheric compared with an industry standard of 1 percent to 2 percent of a deal's value.

An SESC official declined to confirm whether it had received Woodford's correspondence, saying it does not comment on individual cases.

Any probe by the SESC could take months. If a breach of the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act is found, it could lead to a fine. In the case of a serious offence, the prosecutors' office could launch a criminal investigation.

Olympus, which announced on Friday that it had fired Woodford for poor management, acknowledged for the first time on Wednesday that it had paid the hefty fee to the advisers as part of the Gyrus takeover. But it declined to identify them and said it no longer knew of their whereabouts.

The 51-year-old, who had spent 30 years at Olympus, is now back in Britain. He identified the advisory firms as New York-based AXES America LLC and Axam Investments Ltd in the Cayman Islands.

In a September-dated letter to Olympus chairman Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, Woodford said he was staying away from Japan because he had been advised that his personal safety could be at risk.

BID TARGET

Olympus's market value has slumped close to $4 billion since the company announced the dismissal of the executive, who as recently as October 1 had been praised in a company press release for his performance. Olympus is now worth around $4.9 billion.

Shares of Olympus fell 4.9 percent on Thursday, the fifth day of losses.

"Olympus could be an attractive acquisition target if the share price drops enough and it clears up the uncertainties about potential legal challenges. Olympus has decent free cash flow," said CLSA analysts in a note.

"Olympus dominates the global flexible endoscope market, and there are many companies that would like to enter the lucrative medical-equipment business."

Woodford has called on Olympus's shareholders to demand the removal of the board and a detailed examination of all the company's acquisitions over the past decade.

Under the spotlight is 73.4 billion yen ($956 million) paid by Olympus for acquiring three small Japanese firms-- News Chef Co Ltd, which makes microwaveable cookware, Altis Co Ltd, which recycles medical waste, and on-line cosmetics firm Humalabo Co Ltd.

Olympus wrote down 75 percent of the value of the firms, which are all based in the same Tokyo building and employ a total of about 130 people, in the fiscal year it had bought them.

The deals alongside the Gyrus takeover have resulted in $1.3 billion destruction of shareholder value, Woodford says.

Japanese ratings agency R&I on Thursday said it had put Olympus's credit rating on watch for a possible downgrade because of the management turmoil.

R&I has an "A"-rating on Olympus, suggesting high creditworthiness. It had affirmed the rating on August 29 but with a negative outlook.

Olympus is highly geared, with net debt-to-equity ratio running at almost 300 percent, CLSA analysts said.

Outstanding debt is $4.9 billion, most of which is made up by loans, Thomson Reuters Credit Views showed.

All of the company's bonds are privately placed and so do not trade very often.

A structural credit risk model from Thomson Reuters Starmine that assigns a credit rating based in part on equity market volatility and the Olympus's market value as of October 19 applied a "BB"-rating to the company, implying a ranking below investment grade, or junk.

That rating was also the lowest among the company's competitors on Starmine.

Olympus is set to unveil its July-September earnings on November 8 and Chairman Kikukawa, accused by Woodford of running the company "like a total emperor system", is set to speak on global social responsibility on October 25 at a form sponsored by the Nikkei newspaper. ($1=76.78 yen)
