Court upholds ban on handgun sales to people under 21

(Reuters) - The United States may ban federally licensed firearms dealers from selling handguns to people under age 21, an appeals court ruled on Thursday, in a defeat for the National Rifle Association.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Houston rejected the NRA's argument that 18- to 20-year-olds had a right to buy the guns under the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, as well as the equal protection clause of the Fifth Amendment.

A unanimous three-judge panel said Congress, in a law dating from 1968, adopted the sales ban to help curb violent crime. It also said that the nation's founders and 19th-century courts and commentators believed that disarming specific groups did not trample on the right to bear arms.

"Congress was focused on a particular problem: young persons under 21, who are immature and prone to violence, easily accessing handguns," mainly from licensed dealers, Judge Edward Prado wrote for the panel.

"The present ban appears consistent with a longstanding tradition of age- and safety-based restrictions on the ability to access arms," he added.

Thursday's decision upheld a September 2011 ruling by District Judge Sam Cummings in Lubbock, Texas.

The case had been brought a year earlier by the NRA, firearms dealers and individuals against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which is part of the Department of Justice.

NRA DISAPPOINTED

The 5th Circuit said it was the first federal appeals court to address the ban since the Supreme Court in 2008 announced a broad Second Amendment right for individuals to keep and bear arms, in the case District of Columbia v. Heller.

"We are disappointed," said David Thompson, managing partner at Cooper & Kirk in Washington, who represents the NRA. "The ruling is inconsistent with the Supreme Court's opinion in Heller, and we are considering all of our appellate options."

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In reaching its conclusion, the 5th Circuit also rejected an NRA request that it apply "strict scrutiny" in considering the sales ban.

It said a less rigorous review was appropriate because the law did not prevent 18- to 20-year-olds from using handguns for self-defense and other lawful purposes, and people subject to the ban would eventually surmount it by turning 21.

"The government has satisfied its burden of showing a reasonable means-ends fit between the challenged federal laws and an important government interest," Prado wrote.

Prado was appointed to the 5th Circuit by President George W. Bush. He was joined in his opinion by Judge Carolyn Dineen King, who was appointed by President Jimmy Carter; and Judge Catharina Haynes, who was also appointed by Bush.

The case is National Rifle Association of America Inc et al v. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives et al, 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 11-10959.

History made as 1st American joins Mariinsky Ballet

Russia's Mariinsky Ballet is the former prestigious Kirov, the renowned ballet company that trained international stars Anna Pavlova, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rudolf Nureyev. It has now welcomed its first American dancer, Keenan Kampa. This is not Kampa's first experience studying in Russia. She spent three years at the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg. Kampa says the way Russians dance is passionate and soulful and says being around the dancers is "inspiring."

?

By Katie Wall, NBC News

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Two hours before curtain on Friday evening, dancer Keenan Kampa was well aware that her appearance at the Kennedy Center was not just any performance: it was a homecoming.?

?I?ve been coming here since I was a little girl," she said. "And now to be up on this stage, it?s so surreal!???

Courtesy Gene Schiavone

Keenan Kampa at a recent Mariinsky performance of Swan Lake.

Raised in the nearby suburb of Reston, Virginia, Kampa grew up attending matinees and master classes here.? But this time, she?s back as the first American member of the legendary Mariinsky Ballet.?

Formally known as the Kirov Ballet, the centuries-old Russian company and its feeder school, the Vagonova Ballet Academy, have served as the breeding grounds for dance icons Mikhail Baryshnikov, George Balanchine, and Natalia Makarova, among others.

But the demanding nature of Russian dance is nothing new for the 23-year-old.? While attending a master class at the Kennedy Center her senior year of high school, Kampa was spotted by a Vagonova instructor and offered a spot at the academy.? ?I was just very, very fortunate to have that invitation come,? Kampa softly recalled, her humility almost as striking as her 5?8" frame.

But the move to St. Petersburg was hardly seamless.

An outsider at Vagonova, Kampa remembers her first year as ?full of silence.?? Unable to communicate with her Russian peers and away from her family for the first time, she struggled to adapt to a foreign culture and an unfamiliar style of ballet.?

?Everything about that move was uncomfortable- mentally, emotionally, and then physically, too, because the work ethic there is so different from what we as Americans are used to,? she said.

By her second year, Kampa had caught up. Overcoming the initial culture shock and language barrier, she went on to win leading roles in school productions like The Nutcracker, and ultimately became the first American student to graduate with a full Russian degree.? Still, she was heartbroken when she didn?t hear back after auditioning for a spot with the Mariinsky.

?I had always hoped to join the company there,? she said. ?But I knew as an American, and as a foreigner there, it was virtually impossible.??

Unsure of her future, Kampa signed a two-year contract with the Boston Ballet upon graduation.? When an invitation from Russia finally came a year later, she said, ?It was a complete shock.?? Eager to return to St. Petersburg but still under contract with Boston, she delayed her Mariinsky start date to June 2012.

For Kampa, joining the historic ballet is more than a dream come true -- it?s a chance to realize her artistic potential.

?There?s something so special about the way the Russians dance,"?she said. "It?s passionate, it?s soulful, and it?s unlike anything I?ve ever seen.?

The Mariinsky?s performance as part of the Cinderella general ensemble at the Kennedy Center last weekend marked the completion of Kampa?s first North American tour.? She is now back in St. Petersburg with rest of the troupe.

A?perfectionist, Kampa welcomes the rigor the Mariinsky reputation brings with it. ?The challenge now is not to work to just work,? she explains. ?But to work intelligently, with a purpose. Because in my head is the image of the dancer I want to be.?

Yoga in public schools latest test of free speech

Should yoga sessions in public schools be subject to the same restrictions as religious ceremonies? A group of 60 Southern California parents thinks so?they want to pull yoga out of their school district?s curriculum.

Yoga_Class_at_a_Gym4The yoga controversy is the latest twist on the contentious issue of anything having to do with religion in schools funded by taxpayer dollars.

In this case, a lawyer for the parents says yoga has ties to Hinduism and that there is no place for it in the Encinitas Union School District.

?There?s a deep concern that the Encinitas Union School District is using taxpayer resources to promote Ashtanga yoga and Hinduism, a religion system of beliefs and practices,? their attorney, Dean Broyles, told the North County Times, a regional newspaper.

The district has classes in nine schools and is reportedly set to receive a $500,000 grant from an Ashtanga yoga institute to expand the classes. Its superintendent has said he doesn?t plan to stop the classes.

Broyles told ABC News that Ashtanga yoga is indeed a religious practice.

?The poses and positions are acknowledged by Ashtanga and Hindi yoga as forms of worship and prayers to Hindu deities,? he told ABC. ?They have a spiritual and religious meaning behind them.?

Broyles said after doing his own research, he?s convinced Ashtanga yoga in public schools is a constitutional issue.

?We think that children are being used as guinea pigs,? he told ABC. ?It would be like a charismatic Christian organization funding classes in worship and praise.?

The yoga controversy comes after two other high-profile cases about religious expression at publicly funded schools.

In those cases in Texas and Tennessee, the debate is over Christian prayer and Christian slogans at a prominent university and a local high school.

Recent Constitution Daily Stories

Romney?s ace could come from a mystery swing state

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, which promotes separation of church and state, is involved in both situations.

In Texas, a group of high school cheerleaders won the latest legal skirmish over their display of religious slogans on banners used at football games.

A judge has agreed with the students that the slogans were an individual expression of private free speech. That case is headed to trial next year after the students won an injunction.

Constitution Daily contributor Lyle Denniston said in his case analysis for us earlier this week that the judge?s focus was on the application of free speech principles, not religion.

?It was not decisive, for this judge, that the message is, in fact, only a Christian one. It thus is up to the cheerleaders to choose, or not, to vary the message so that it reflects religious tolerance as well as religious freedom. That is a civics lesson, even if not one required by the Constitution,? he said.

The other high-profile case involves the University of Tennessee at Knoxville football program, which has traditionally invoked a public prayer in its stadium before football games.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation said some alumni complained about the tradition, and were upset that the name of Jesus Christ was used during the prayers. It asked the school to stop the practice.

In September, another school in the state system, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, said it would use a moment of silence at games, in response to a similar complaint from the foundation.

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is continuing with non-sectarian prayers at the games.

In its dialogue with the university, Freedom From Religion Foundation cited the historic Santa Fe v. Jane Doe decision in 2000 that barred prayers at high school football games; the County of Allegheny v. American Civil Liberties Union case from 1989 (which barred nativity scenes from a courthouse); and Abington vs. Schempp from 1963 (which halted the reading of Bible passages in public schools).

The school said there was nothing wrong with a pre-kickoff invocation.

Hi everyone, it's so nice to "see" you here. I miss you all so much. It's very exciting when I have something to post. There's a rush of excitement for me.

I feel so lucky today! Why? Because we have a guest blogger. When Lani Muelrath found out that I was struggling with keeping up Healthy Girl's Kitchen posting along with my other responsibilities she quickly offered to do a guest post for us. She asked me the type of content that I was looking for, and of course, I asked one thing, "how did you overcome compulsive overeating?"

If you don't know Lani Muelrath from the Plant-based internet world, let me fill you in on her background. Lani is also known as The Plant-Based Fitness Expert (www.lanimuelrath.com), and she specializes in helping people who struggle with weight and energy transform their bodies -and their lives - without going hungry or practicing grueling, excessive exercise. Lani is the author of Fit Quickies: 5 Minute Targeted, Body Shaping Workouts. Multiple resources for you for healthy fitness, weight loss, and plant-based nutrition at lanimuelrath.com.

But back to my question, how did Lani overcome compulsive overeating?

The answers I got did not come as a total surprise (remember, I said total--there is one thing that really has me reeling), but they are a welcome reminder of all that is important to remember on this journey. And boy, do I always need reminding!

So here's how Lani answered my call:

For years I labored under the delusion (I"ll explain) that I was an 'emotional overeater'. I even fessed up to the statement: "I'm a compulsive overeater", hoping for a breakthrough.?

Still, the frustrating and excruciating experience of continuing to eat on an overfilled yet hungry stomach continued and the long term relief from it eluded me. And all the self-exploration and screams of supplication on my knees never made a difference until I got a few things straight.

To boil it down to the bones, the answer was found wrapped in three gifts. These I refer to in my practice as the 3 Pillars. The are a critical trio for healthy success. They are food, fitness, and the most often neglected third door, frame of mind.

In the event that you are up against the wall of compulsive overeating, maybe these lessons from my experience will give you insights and possibly the breakthrough that you are looking for. Even if you, like me, are happy, well-adjusted, have a good job, happy relationships - yet can't seem to get it together in this arena. "What's wrong with me?" you ask.

It's not a character flaw. And guilt just makes it worse (I'll explain that, too).

6 Steps to Ending Compulsive Overeating

Here are six pivotal points that turned my life around when it comes to food, eating, and my body.

1) Eat enough - in time. Don't dismiss this one quickly, even if you think you ARE eating enough and believe the problem is that you are eating too much. If you have a weight problem, it seems self-evident, doesn't it? That's how it seemed to me. Once I even put an overweight picture of myself on the refrigerator as visual proof to myself that "see, there's plenty of fuel on your body!" to help me through a fast to - you guessed it, lose weight. The idea was to discourage me from eating. Perhaps you've done something similar.

This set me on a mission to continually cut back, delay eating, or otherwise under eat. This is the worst thing I could have done to lose weight. Hunger presents a primary stress to your body. It threatens your very survival instinct, for nothing is as basic to our survival as getting the fuel needed to think, move, and be.

Let's say another stressor enters your day - you think? The toast burns, the traffic makes you late for work, you have a verbal scrimmage with your SO, the car runs low on gas and where is that gas station anyway?

Which of these stressors is 1) the easiest to relieve, and 2) the one your body will prioritize as needing relief? You guessed it. Satisfying the hunger. And instead of seeing the wisdom of our bodies, we blame ourselves for being weak, compulsive, 'emotional' overeaters.

Action item: Eat to satisfaction early in the day and watch the night munchies evaporate.

2) Eat a whole foods, low fat plant-based diet. This has to do with hunger satisfaction and satiety. Your body is designed to respond with appropriate fullness signals when presented with food it was designed to thrive on, and that means full of fiber and low on fat and as close as possible to how it was delivered in nature. Some people need to be more prudent about this than others - you need to discover your own niche for getting to your goals.

Action item: Edge out lower quality food with high fiber, low fat plant foods: vegetables, starchy vegetables, whole grains, beans, fruit.

3) Move your body. This means also not sitting too much. Not only because it burns calories, which it does, or because exercise shapes muscle, which it does. Activity also restores equilibrium and willpower, giving you more resources for sticking to your plant. See 5 minute willpower workout #1: Exercise, the closest thing to a willpower magic bullet.

Action item: Find small chunks of time throughout the day to move your body. Even if you are getting in your workouts, be mindful of the power even 2 - 5 minutes of moving your muscles to restore well-being and inner strength.

4) Meditate. Breathe and be. Cultivate some kind of practice or quiet time that has the simple objective of restoring mental and emotional equilibrium. This is huge with mindset mastery, and the one most often neglected leg of the 3 Pillars.

Action item: See 5 minute anti-anxiety paint and willpower workout: How to meditate in 5 simple steps.

5) Abstain from negative self-talk. Look back to #1 above, where I gave the example of a fat photo on the fridge. Somehow this was supposed to shame me into avoiding food - and it did, until I couldn't take it any more and it backfired in a binge. But what kind of a message is this to send yourself anyway? You cannot hate yourself to a better figure. And if you've been using the tight belt trick or the fat photo strategy yourself, something is going to need to shift out of the negative for you to be successful.

Action item: This one has many layers, but for starters, begin by making note of every time negative self-talk hijacks your inner world. Every time. It starts with awareness. From there, create positive alternatives to the negative messages.

6) Give up the guilt. Indulgence in feeling bad about 'breaking' your healthy eating plans compounds stress, driving us straight into the stress-relieving properties of - you guessed it - breaking your healthy eating plans with pleasure-promising foods. Ironic!

Action item: Instead, allow wiggle room for less-than-perfect.

I believe in the 3 Pillars so firmly, they are the heart of my book. Fit Quickies: 5 Minute Targeted Body Shaping Workouts sounds like a fitness book - and it is, but it is truly a?Trojan?horse of healthy success. For inside that horse is solid attention to practices of eating, activity, and mastery of mindset for success.

Once I got the 3 Pillars in place, things changed radically for me when it comes to food, eating, and my body. So much so that I haven't had a binge since 1996. And I lost 50 lbs for good. Have I sometimes had too much to eat? Maybe more mousse pie than I really needed? Certainly - that is normal. In contrast, random acts of overeating beyond fullness, repeatedly, is disturbed eating.

The good news is there is a way out. I've done it and have seen it done over and over again. Once you see the interconnectedness of eating, moving, and thinking, you can take action for change.

Was anything on Lani's list a surprise to you? What was it?

Personally, what kind of has me thinking was #1--Eat Enough--in time. I have spent so many years trying to eat less and feeling like such a pig in the process. Like right now, as I type this, I am feeling really hungry. There is a big empty pit feeling in my stomach. What would happen if I filled it, like, now? It's not time for a meal. Would filling that pit now help me to not overeat at night?

I don't know, but I'm certainly going to try it.

Thanks Lani!

Low-Wage Factory Jobs In Haiti Not 'Perfect' But A Start For Recovery, Clinton Says

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton who is also the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, joined Haiti's President Michel Martelly at the opening ceremony for the park in the fishing village of Caracol on the north coast.

?We had learned that supporting long-term prosperity in Haiti meant more than providing aid,? Sec. Clinton told a group of investors at a luncheon following the event, the Associated Press reported.

?It required investments in infrastructure and the economy that would help the Haitian people achieve their own dreams. So we shifted our assistance to investments to address some of the biggest challenges facing this country: creating jobs and sustainable economic growth.?

The Caracol Industrial Park is expected to create around 40,000 jobs in an area where subsistence farming and fishing are the only economic options available aside from migrating to more developed parts of the country, though many of those areas in the south were damaged by the 2010 earthquake.

The capital of Port-au-Prince was hit the hardest by the magnitude 7.0 quake and over 350,000 people are still living in tents and temporary shelters on the outskirts of the city. Furthermore, a cholera epidemic claimed over 7,000 lives in the aftermath of that disaster.

Indeed, the jobs are sorely needed in a country where unemployment was last recorded at over 40 percent in 2010, and where a vast majority of the people live below the poverty line.

South Korean garment company Sae-A Trading, Co. Ltd, has agreed to create 20,000 permanent jobs over the next six years and build 5,000 homes nearby for its workers, the BBC reported.

Sae-A has already hired and trained 1,000 workers and has made its first shipment of 67,000 garments to be sold at Wal-Mart stores, Sec. Clinton said.

Daniel Cho, a spokesman for Sae-A in Haiti, told the AP that the workers were being paid around $5 a day for eight hours of work.

Critics argue that the low wages and corporate tax rates will be more beneficial to foreign businesses and investors than the Haitian people.

?This is not a strategy that is meant to provide Haiti with any measure of sustainable development ... The only reason those industries come to Haiti is because the country has the lowest wages in the region,? Alex Dupuy, a Haiti-born sociologist who teaches at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, told the AP.

Sec. Clinton acknowledged that the project was not ?perfect.?

?What development project anywhere in the world is? And there will be frustration from time to time,? she said at the opening ceremony.

?But for all of the inevitable challenges, today and the development here represents a new opportunity for Haiti.?

In addition to the $124 million the U.S. government has invested in the project, it has built a 10 million-megawatt thermal plant which Sec. Clinton said would eventually provide 100,000 people in the region with access to electricity for the first time, adding that only 12 percent of the population of 10 million currently as such access.

She also mentioned that the construction of a new container port was in the planning stages.

While the U.S. government has made a significant investment in the project, Sec. Clinton emphasized that it would ultimately be up to the Haitian government to sustain and expand it, while providing more support and services for its people and an attractive environment for investment.

?In addition to effective government, Haiti needs a strong justice sector, free and fair elections, housing, energy, schools, health care -- all of which will serve the people of Haiti, but also attract even more investment,? she said.

EU reminds Microsoft to offer browser choices on Windows 8

European Union antitrust regulators have warned Microsoft that it must offer consumers a choice of rival browsers in its new Windows 8 operating system.?

EU antitrust regulators warned Microsoft not to repeat the mistake of denying consumers a choice of rival browsers in its new Windows software, in a dispute that has already cost the software giant more than a billion euros in fines over a decade.

EU antitrust chief Joaquin Almunia said on Wednesday he had spelt out his concerns to Microsoft about Windows 8, its updated flagship software set for release on Friday.

"I have precisely transmitted ... my concerns, what kind of presentation should be avoided if they don't want to take the risk of a new investigation," Almunia told a news briefing.

The EU competition commissioner's warning accompanied charges Microsoft had broken a promise to offer European consumers a choice of rival browsers in its previous version of Windows, which could result in a substantial fine.

Microsoft promised three years ago to offer browser choices, to settle an EU antitrust investigation and avoid a penalty that could have been as much as 10 percent of its global turnover.

But the EU Commission, which acts as antitrust watchdog in the European Union, said Microsoft had not fulfilled its pledge between February last year and July this year, confirming an earlier Reuters report.

Almunia said Microsoft must face the music.

"If companies enter into commitments, they must do what they are committed to do or face the consequences. Companies should be deterred from any temptation to renege on promises or even to neglect their duty," he told the briefing.

Microsoft could face a significant fine as it is the second time it has failed to comply with an EU order.

A sanction could top $7.4 billion or 10 percent of its revenues for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012 - but the final figure is expected to be lower, as the infringement covered a relatively short period of time.

Microsoft, which has been penalised 1.6 billion euros ($2.1 billion) in the last decade for infringing EU rules, apologised. It has four weeks to reply to the Commission's "statement of objections" or charge sheet.

"Although this was the result of a technical error, we take responsibility for what happened, and we are strengthening our internal procedures to help ensure something like this cannot happen again," the company said in a statement.

No tablet probe

The antitrust regulator's action should serve as a warning to other companies, said Susanne Zuehlke, a partner at Brussels-based law firm Latham & Watkins.

"It shows that the Commission takes its enforcement seriously and follows up on cases even when they appeared closed," she said.

Almunia said he had no reason to go after Microsoft's operating system for tablets, a market that includes rivals Apple and Google.

"We have looked at Windows RT and on the basis of our investigation so far, there are no grounds to pursue further investigation on this particular issue," he said.

The Commission said in July several companies had accused Microsoft of only allowing its own Internet Explorer browser to be installed on devices running Windows 8 on Windows RT tablets.

Microsoft's share of the European browser market has roughly halved since 2008 to 29 percent, on a par with Google's Chrome but behind Mozilla's 30 percent share, according to web search firm Statcounter.

With the Microsoft case heading for resolution, the next battle for the Commission is likely to be with Google, the target of complaints by Microsoft and more than a dozen other rivals over its core search engine business.

The world's most popular search engine is now in talks with the EU watchdog that could help it avoid sanctions which could amount to some $4 billion.

Surfer killed in shark attack off California coast

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A shark killed a male surfer at a popular surf spot off California's coast on Tuesday in the second fatal shark attack at the same beach in two years, authorities said.

The incident took place at Surf Beach near Vandenberg Air Force Base, north of the coastal city of Santa Barbara. The beach was closed by authorities after the attack.

"It was a confirmed shark attack and a confirmed death," a Santa Barbara County Sheriff's spokeswoman said.

A friend of the surfer pulled him out of the water after the late-morning attack, but life-saving efforts were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead at the scene, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

Authorities could not immediately identify the size or type of shark involved.

"I don't think they saw enough of the shark to identify it," sheriff's department spokeswoman Diane Cline said.

Fatal shark attacks are rare on the U.S. West Coast, according to records kept by the Shark Research Committee, a nonprofit group that documents attacks.

Surfers were the most frequent victims and Great White sharks were the most frequent attackers, according to the group.

The attack came almost exactly two years after a shark attacked a 19-year-old man on a boogie board at the same beach on October 22, 2010, pulling him underwater. That man died from wounds to his leg.

Assassin's Creed Finds a New Home

assasssins creed film michael fassbender

Fans of the Assassin's Creed gaming franchise will already be eagerly awaiting the release of Assassin's?Creed III on October 30, but now there's even more to get excited about: Ubisoft's planned Assassin's?Creed film adaptation ? set to star Michael Fassbender ? has got itself studio backing from New Regency and a distributor in the form of Fox.

Previously, Ubisoft had sought Sony's help in getting their movie made, but negotiations broke down over Ubisoft's desire to maintain more creative control. Now that Fassbender is attached to play the Desmond Miles/Altair/Ezio character, a deal has been struck with New Regency ? the guys currently producing Steve McQueen and Fassbender's latest collaboration, 12 Years?A?Slave ? to make many gamers' dreams come to cinematic life.

In effect, what this means is that the Assassin's Creed movie is really happening, with Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet hoping that everything will be ready to roll in summer 2013.?

This could turn into yet another big league movie franchise for Fassbender, following X-Men:?FIrst Class, Prometheus and Shame. Well, maybe not Shame, but definitely X-Men:?First Class and Prometheus.

So does this news make you excited??If you're a fan of the gaming franchise, do you think film can do the series justice??If you aren't aware of the games, does the idea of a modern day Regular Joe (Desmond?Miles) hooking into a machine that allows him to live the lives of his assassin ancestors sound like a good movie conceit to you??Let us know in the comment box below.

Director? Writer??
It's all well and good getting excited by an actor, and a very fine actor is Fassbender, but it'll be for nothing if the director isn't up to the task, and just as significantly (as Prometheus showed) a good screenwriter is pretty important too. I really hope they manage to pull this together though, I'd love to see a decent game adaptation and AC is a great candidate for it. More

Very excited about this! I think fassbend would be a great Alta?r, not so much Ezio, and possabliy a little old for desmond :/ but I like that the casting isn't being ageist, which suggests they think he can do a good job. With no idea what the plot will be it's hard to tell if he will even be playing them all. Possibly a little Looper style cosmetics could work. The story would make a great film tho, handled well. Lets hope it's not another Prince of Persia! More

RE:
Fassbender!! another game to movie shit fest. have these people played the fucking game!!. Fassbender! really! . Have these people played the fucking game there own company created??. How are do they expect the fan base to go along with this one?. hes to play Desmond/Ezio!!!! Desmond is clearly of middle east origin!! Fassbender , while a decent actor is a ginger German/Irish I believe? Id rather a full length animated movie made solely by the same guys who make the games!!. Think im repeatin More

And Kristen Bell will be reprising her role, yes? That said, the adaptation of this series will be interesting. Because the plot could be made into an entertaining film, but it does make it difficult to turn into a series of films. If it was me, I'd much rather make this as a TV show somewhere like HBO or AMC, get some real money and creative freedom behind it and it'd be right up there with Game of Thrones and Rome. More

AC the movie.
As an avid fan of the games i must say that this has the potential to be a truly great franchise. The plot of the games however is too flimsy to be adapted into a strong movie, however, with a few tweeks and a cracking writer this has tremendous potential, Fassbender we know is a great actor and the Desmond/Altair/Ezio charachters can all be strongly portrayed by a powerful and adaptable actor like Fassbender. whilst we still wait for a strong Game to Film movie, this definately has the potenti More

Rapid changes in the Earth's core: The magnetic field and gravity from a satellite perspective

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Annual to decadal changes in Earth's magnetic field in a region that stretches from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean have a close relationship with variations of gravity in this area. From this it can be concluded that outer core processes are reflected in gravity data.

This is the result presented by a German-French group of geophysicists in the latest issue of PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States).

The main field of Earth's magnetic field is generated by flows of liquid iron in the outer core. Earth's magnetic field protects us from cosmic radiation particles. Therefore, understanding the processes in the outer core is important to understand the terrestrial shield. Key to this are measurements of the geomagnetic field itself. A second, independent access could be represented by the measurement of minute changes in gravity caused by the fact that the flow in the liquid Earth's core is associated with mass displacements. The research group has now succeeded to provide the first evidence of such a connection of fluctuations in Earth's gravity and magnetic field.

They used magnetic field measurements of the GFZ-satellite CHAMP and extremely accurate measurements of Earth's gravity field derived from the GRACE mission, which is also under the auspices of the GFZ. "The main problem was the separation of the individual components of the gravity data from the total signal," explains Vincent Lesur from the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, who is involved in the study. A satellite only measures the total gravity, which consists of the mass fractions of Earth's body, water and ice on the ground and in the air. To determine the mass redistribution by flows in the outer core, the thus attained share of the total gravity needs to be filtered out. "Similarly, in order to capture the smaller changes in the outer core, the proportion of the magnetic crust and the proportion of the ionosphere and magnetosphere need to be filtered out from the total magnetic field signal measured by the satellite," Vincent Lesur explains. The data records of the GFZ-satellite missions CHAMP and GRACE enabled this for the first time.

During the investigation, the team focused on an area between the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, as the determined currents flows were the highest here. Extremely fast changes (so-called magnetic jerks) were observed in the year 2007 at Earth's surface. These are an indication for sudden changes of liquid flows in the upper outer core and are important for understanding the magneto-hydrodynamics in Earth's core. Using the satellite data, a clear signal of gravity data from Earth's core could be received for the first time.

This results in consequences for the existing conceptual models. Until now, for example, it was assumed that the differences in the density of the molten iron in Earth's core are not large enough to generate a measurable signal in Earth's gravitational field. The newly determined mass flows in the upper outer core allow a new approach to Earth's core hydrodynamics.
