"Fiscal cliff" deal elusive, though positions soften

(Reuters) - The Congress advanced by inches on Tuesday toward compromise on taxes and spending, but a firm deal to avert the "fiscal cliff" at the end of the year still seemed miles away, despite growing pressure from business interests for action.

President Barack Obama was set to hold meetings with business leaders on Tuesday and Wednesday and then travel to a factory in Pennsylvania on Friday to press his case on taxes.

Fresh from his November 6 re-election, Obama wants to extend low income tax rates for middle-class Americans, but let tax rates rise on income over $250,000 a year per family.

Republicans oppose this position and favor extending low income tax rates, adopted during the administration of former President George W. Bush, for all income levels.

Without action by Congress, the Bush tax cuts will expire at year-end and rates will go up for most taxpayers.

The tax rate dispute is the central obstacle to an agreement that would prevent the nation from plunging off the fiscal cliff, a convergence of an estimated $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts that threatens to trigger another recession.

"There remains no clarity on the ultimate status on the Bush tax cuts, which have to be resolved before you can move forward with the remainder of the fiscal cliff," said Chris Krueger, an analyst at Guggenheim Securities' Washington Research Group.

The debate in Congress raged on as the government reported another increase in planned U.S. business spending in October, while U.S. stock prices were broadly flat on Wall Street. The Dow Jones industrial average was at about 12,950, up 15 percent from a year ago despite market worries about fiscal policy.

Republicans have not shifted from their stance against any tax rate increases, but a few have been publicly disavowing a no-new-taxes pledge to which most of them have adhered for years, putting tax revenues, if not higher rates, on the negotiating table.

REID SLAMS NORQUIST

The pledge - enforced by fiscal austerity activist Grover Norquist and his group Americans for Tax Reform - came in for renewed criticism from Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid.

"For years, Norquist has bullied lawmakers ... So I was pleased to see a few Republicans in Congress distance themselves from Norquist this week," Reid said on the Senate floor.

"Several Republican lawmakers have said revenue should be on the table during fiscal cliff negotiations. Now it's time for those Republicans to turn happy talk into action."

Norquist appeared Tuesday on Fox News and said talk of Republicans backing away from his pledge was "a complete media-created frenzy."

Also on Tuesday, Dick Durbin, a senior Senate Democrat and close Obama ally, urged fellow liberals to consider reforming the costly Medicare and Medicaid healthcare programs, signaling possible Democratic compromise in an area where they have steadfastly resisted change.

"Progressives should be willing to talk about ways to ensure the long-term viability of Medicare and Medicaid" for the elderly and poor, Durbin said in excerpts from a speech.

But he added that Medicare and Medicaid should not be part of the current negotiations on averting the fiscal cliff. On that front, Durbin stood firmly with Obama, urging extension of middle class tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans.

As part of a multi-pronged push on taxes, Obama will meet with a group of small-business owners on Tuesday. On Wednesday he will host leaders of larger businesses. Then on Friday, he will visit a manufacturing facility of The Rodon Group, a small toy company in Pennsylvania.

Obama's visit and his meetings at the White House are meant to pressure Republicans to extend tax cuts for middle-income people and end them for wealthier families.

A pressure group called Fix the Debt - which includes budget deficit hawks and corporate leaders - scheduled its own news conference for Wednesday to urge Congress "to enact a plan that would allow us to steer away from the fiscal cliff and further economic instability."

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell ripped into Obama for planning to hit the road later this week to promote his tax agenda. "Rather than sitting down with lawmakers of both parties and working out an agreement, he's back out on the campaign trail," McConnell roared on the Senate floor.

"We already know the president is a very good campaigner. What we don't know is whether he has the leadership qualities necessary to lead his party to a bipartisan agreement."

Radio's Laura Ingraham off the air

NEW YORK (AP) ? Radio talk show host Laura Ingraham is off the air ? at least temporarily.

She said Tuesday that she's leaving her distributor, Talk Radio Network, after more than nine years because her contract is up. Ingraham said she is in discussions with other distributors about her show, which currently airs on 325 stations nationally.

Talkers magazine says the conservative Ingraham is the most-listened to woman on radio, with an estimated 5.75 million listeners a week. Talkers said that ranks her among the top eight radio hosts overall.

In the meantime, she said she'll keep her opinions flowing on her website, on Twitter and during Fox News Channel appearances.

Arafat's remains exhumed for poison tests

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Forensic experts took samples from Yasser Arafat's buried corpse in the West Bank on Tuesday, trying to determine if he was murdered by Israeli agents using the hard-to-trace radioactive poison, Polonium.

Palestinians witnessed the funeral of their hero and longtime leader eight years ago, but conspiracy theories surrounding his death have never been laid to rest.

Many are convinced their icon was the victim of a cowardly assassination, and may stay convinced whatever the outcome of this autopsy. But some in the city of Ramallah where he lies deplored the exhumation.

"This is wrong. After all this time, today they suddenly want to find out the truth?" said construction worker Ahmad Yousef, 31, who stopped to watch the disinterment, carried out behind a wall of blue plastic near the Palestinian presidency headquarters.

"They should have done it eight years ago," he said.

French magistrates in August opened a murder inquiry into Arafat's death in Paris in 2004 after a Swiss institute said it had discovered high levels of polonium on clothing of his which was supplied by his widow, Suha, for a television documentary.

"Samples will be taken according to a very strict protocol and these samples will be analyzed," said Darcy Christen, spokesman for Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland that carried out the original tests on Arafat's clothes.

"In order to do these analyses, to check, cross-check and double cross-check, it will take several months and I don't think we'll have anything tangible available before March or April next year," he added.

Arafat was always a freedom fighter to Palestinians but a terrorist to Israelis first, and a partner for peace only later. He led the bid for a Palestinian state through years of war and peacemaking, then died in a French hospital aged 75 after a short, mysterious illness.

No autopsy was carried out at the time, at the request of Suha, and French doctors who treated him said they were unable to determine the cause of death.

But allegations of foul play immediately surfaced, and many Palestinians pointed the finger at Israel, which confined Arafat to his West Bank headquarters in Ramallah for the final two and a half years of his life after a Palestinian uprising erupted.

Israel denies murdering him. Its leader at the time, Ariel Sharon, now lies in a coma from which he is expected never to awake. Israel invited the Palestinian leadership to release all Arafat's medical records, which were never made public following his death and still have not been opened.

FRENCH INVESTIGATORS

Polonium, apparently ingested with food, was found to have caused the death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006. But some experts have questioned whether Arafat could have died in this way, pointing to a brief recovery during his illness that they said was not consistent with radioactive poisoning. They also noted he did not lose all his hair.

Eight years is considered the limit to detect any traces of the fast-decaying polonium and Lausanne hospital questioned in August if it would be worth seeking any samples, if access to Arafat's body was delayed as late as "October or November."

Not all of Arafat's family agreed to the exhumation, and his wife Suha chose not to attend the operation she had prompted.

Working in parallel with the forensic team, French magistrates were in Ramallah this week to ask if members of Arafat's inner circle might be able to shed light on his death.

One source told Reuters the French had a list of 60 questions, and had questioned one man for five hours.

Many Palestinians acknowledge that a Palestinian would almost certainly have had to administer any poison, wittingly or unwittingly.

From the Editor's Desk: Doing a good thing badly

There's a reason why I tend to post stories on Google+ about the traditional journalism industry. For one, it's where I came from. There are days I miss it. But there are so many more days that I don't. Another reason is that what we do here is rooted in it. Not just us, but every tech blog, regardless of its background.

But really, for me, this job is fun. And we try to keep it that way. Make no mistake, we're writing about phones here. Hardly life-and-death stuff. But it's still important, and it's still challenging. Deciding what to write. Editing it into a cohesive story. Coming up with compelling illustrations. And that final moment where you hit the publish button and suddenly think "Oh, shit. What if I screwed something up?" It happens every time, no matter the story or review, no matter how much work we put into it. That feeling doesn't go away.

And you know what? We don't always get it right.

(AP) ? The economically powerful region of Catalonia was electing a new parliament Sunday, and the outcome could determine whether it holds a referendum asking Catalans if they want to remain part of Spain.

In Catalonia's view, the central government is draining its finances during the nation's economic crisis.

The regional government, led by Artur Mas, called the early election as part of a power struggle with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy regarding the size of Catalonia's contribution to national coffers. But what began as a quarrel over money has turned into a test of Spain's territorial integrity.

If voters give Mas strong support Sunday, he has pledged to hold a referendum asking Catalans if they would prefer to split from Spain at a time of deep financial crisis.

Polls in Catalonia, one of Spain's few regions with its own language, forecast a majority for parties supporting a referendum on independence, a proposed plebiscite that Spain's central government has ridiculed and called "unconstitutional."

"These are the most decisive and transcendental elections in the history of Catalonia," Mas said after voting in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia in northeast Spain. "There is much at stake for all 7 million of us Catalans."

According to Rajoy, only the central government has the constitutional right to call a referendum of any kind, and then it would almost certainly have to be held nationwide.

Mas has rebutted Madrid by saying that if pro-independence lawmakers are given an absolute majority in the next four-year regional legislature, this would lend legitimacy to his call for a referendum and a need to alter the constitution to accommodate the will of the Catalan electorate.

Good weather on Sunday meant voter turnout was higher than in the previous seven elections dating back to 1988, Catalonia's government said.

Rajoy has said that talk of independence is a side issue to the country's real problem, which is to find a way to create employment and address its deficit.

While Rajoy is immersed in combating Spain's worst financial crisis in decades, Mas claims Catalonia is being asked to shoulder too much of the tax burden and that it could do better if it separated and tried to become an independent member state of the European Union.

"Five years ago I was in favor of a federal model with Spain, but now we have seen that is not viable," Miquel Angel Aragon, a 37-year-old aid worker, said after voting in Barcelona. "I am in favor of independence."

Catalonia is responsible for around a fifth of Spain's economic output, and many residents feel the central government gives back too little in recognition of the region's contribution.

Catalans have said during growing public protests that their industrialized region is being hit harder than most by austerity measures aimed at avoiding a national bailout like those needed by Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Cyprus.

Madrid has traditionally said that simplifying the state's financial model by excluding overall costs such as defense only creates a distorted image of how taxation and spending are distributed.

A rising tide of Catalan separatist sentiment was spurred when Rajoy failed to agree to Mas' proposals to lighten Catalonia's tax load and 1.5 million people turned out in Barcelona on Sept. 11 for the largest nationalist rally in the region since the 1970s.

These growing economic concerns have combined with a longstanding nationalist streak in Catalonia, which has its own cultural traditions that were harshly repressed by the military dictatorship of Francisco Franco from the end of Spain's Civil War in 1939, to Franco's death in 1975.

One of the most potent symbols of the divisions distancing Catalonia and the country's capital city can be seen in the bitter rivalry between the Barcelona and Real Madrid soccer clubs.

In recent years, at least two grassroots groups have held unofficial referendums on independence in towns throughout the region, while some small villages have gone to the extreme of declaring themselves "free Catalan territories."

Catalans are viewed by most Spaniards as thrifty, hardworking people, and most ? not least many Catalans ? have been shocked by how their regional debt has swelled to ?42 billion ($54.4 billion) of the staggering ?140 billion debt ascribed to all of Spain's regional governments.

The economic crisis has highlighted the high cost of running Spain's 17 semi-autonomous regions alongside a central government. The Catalan government has had to ask for a ?5 billion ($6.5 million) bailout from Spain like other indebted regions.

Mas' government counters that each year it contributes ?16 billion ($21 billion) more than it gets back from Spain. It also complains that important infrastructure projects needed to revive Spain's sick economy are being left unfunded.

Even so, many people feel they are both Catalan and Spanish, and are wary of the idea of trying to divide the country.

"We are not separatists, we want to remain part of Spain," said retired industrial designer Francisco Palau, 69, who emerged from a polling station alongside his wife. "We defend current plurality," he said, adding that setting up a new state and government "would be very expensive."

About 5.2 million people were eligible to vote for candidates to fill the 135-seat Catalan parliament that sits in Barcelona.

MechBass robot nails the bass guitar sound with Arduino and a stone cold groove video

End-of-year engineering school projects often pique our interest for their creativity. It's not every day that they can carry a bassline, however. James McVay's robot project for his honors year at the Victoria University of Wellington, the supremely well-named MechBass, wouldn't have much trouble keeping up with a favorite band. It centers on a custom, Arduino-compatible board that controls the plucking, fretting and damping of four strings to faithfully recreate bass guitar sounds from MIDI input. The design even accounts for the unwanted noises of actuators and motors, while virtually everything was either 3D-printed or laser-cut just for the task at hand. Sounds good? There's more in the pipeline: an upcoming Swivel robot will experiment with different playing techniques, and McVay ultimately sees his work teaching us about robotic music's interaction with human performers. For now, we'll be happy with the video after the break and hope that MechBass takes requests.

Powerball numbers drawn; jackpot was at $325M

Lottery officials say the winning Powerball jackpot numbers have been drawn, and they are 22-32-37-44-50 and Powerball 34.

The estimated Powerball jackpot was at $325 million, the fourth-largest in the game's history.

Under that amount, a single winner's cash payout would be nearly $213 million before taxes.

Lottery officials have said they're unsure what effect the start of the Christmas shopping season will have on ticket sales, which normally pick up in the days before high-dollar drawings.

Recent Powerball winners include an Iowa couple that won a whopping $202 million on Sept. 26. A week later, a Delaware resident picked all six numbers for a $50 million payday.

Park & Rec Offering Ski and Snowboarding Lessons - Framingham ...

Framingham Park & Recreation Department will offer ski or snowboarding lessons beginning in January. The lessons are for children in Grades 4-12 and will take place Sunday mornings at Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford.

The fee includes transportation, a 1-hour lesson, and 2-hours of unsupervised
skiing or snowboarding. Bus leaves Bowditch Field at 7:45 a.m. and returns at
1:30 p.m.

Registration begins Dec. 6 for Framingham residents at 9 a.m.

The fee for 6 lessons is $275. First lesson starts Jan. 6. Last lesson is Feb. 10.

Equipment can be rented for an additional $95 at the time of the pre-fit, not at registration.

Internet Marketing Jargon That Should Die In 2013 | Business 2 ...

Coming up on a new year inevitably motivates bloggers to write posts reflecting on the past, or pontificating on the future. This post squarely fits in the pontification category. Add a little ranting to it, and you have a recipe for a 2013 wish list of 10 Internet marketing phrases that should disappear forever.

  1. No More Jargon!Return on Influence ? This is a wishy-washy ?metric? that social media marketers use to avoid reporting return on investment. Executives don?t care about influence ? they care about the bottom line. This phrase would not be missed if it disappeared next year.
  2. Link Building ? Google?s Penguin update has made link building for the sake of link building a relic of the past. Writing great content, guest blogging on relevant websites and digital PR are the only forms of ?link building? accepted by Google today. Guess what? That?s not link building ? It?s content marketing, guest blogging and digital PR. Let?s call it what it is.
  3. Splash Page ? What the heck is a splash page? OK, everyone knows what it is, but why do Internet marketers call it a splash page? There?s nothing splashy about it. It sounds like visitors to a splash page will be presented with the Internet?s version of jazz hands. It?s either an under construction page or a segmentation page.
  4. Mobile SEO ? There?s no such thing as mobile SEO. According to Jesse Laffen, mobile search results are some of the least personalized. Mobile SEO is just simply SEO. Mobile websites sit on the same Internet as non-mobile websites.
  5. Reciprocal Linking ? Penguin has successfully extinguished this tactic. In 2013, it should exit stage left and leave the Internet marketing lexicon forever.
  6. Comment Spam ? This used to be the scourge of the Internet. In fact, it?s caused many webmasters to moderate their blog comments. Since Penguin was released comment spam has diminished substantially. Next year should see the official demise of comment spam.
  7. Conversation ? This is what some social media marketers believe is good marketing. Social media conversation doesn?t drive ROI. It?s neither scalable nor predictable. Landing pages, conversions and lead nurturing, on the other hand, are scalable and predictable. As a result, driving social media traffic to a landing page for conversion can drive ROI. This is achieved by using social media as a content broadcast channel while others organically evangelize said content ? not social media conversations.
  8. Transparency ? This is just a fancy way of referring to honesty and openness in social channels. So, was it ever a good idea to lie and obfuscate in marketing? Telling marketers to be transparent is like reminding human beings to breathe. It?s not necessary.
  9. #FF or #FollowFriday ? In its prime #FollowFriday was a popular weekly tradition on Twitter. Today, it certainly sits on the downward slope of the curve with the laggards. It?s dying a slow death and probably won?t make it past 2013.
  10. Bounce Rate ? Marketers worry about this number too much. Bounce rates vary greatly across industries and channels driving traffic. Besides, what?s a good bounce rate? It?s a rate better than the competition which can?t be tracked. The rate Google reports is a dirty number that can be skewed for a variety of reasons ? to include bots, RSS and bookmarking sites (especially Stumbleupon.com). A more meaningful rate to track is visit to conversion.

The above pontification ? with a hint of rant ? only represents 10 phrases of industry jargon that should disappear in 2013. This leaves plenty of room for others. You?re HIGHLY encouraged to add your most hated jargon below. Don?t be shy. . . let ?em fly.

Television Writing from the Inside Out

(And, speaking from a slightly more writerly perspective, ?Whew.?)

A few years ago I wrote a book called Television Writing from the Inside Out, spilling everything I?ve learned about the art/craft and business of television writing and television in general after many, many, many (oy!) years of dedication, joy, and, yeah, the inevitable moments of despair.

TVWFIO?has become a college screen and television writing class staple and as a result has sold a ton of copies. It?s still going strong in print, but let?s face it, the print audience ain?t what it used to be.

When I sold the trade paperback to its publisher, I kept all electronic rights, and TVWriter? has marketed a PDF version for awhile now. I?ve always meant to branch out to other formats, but ? and I admit this with some embarrassment ? I was too intimidated by the logistics of formatting and marketing to take the plunge.

Well, that?s over with. As of Friday, November 16th, the Kindle-ized version of my baby has been up and at ?em at Amazon.Com, and I?m writing this to let that teeny weeny little fringe group of you who haven?t yet read Television Writing from the Inside Out know that it?s wriggling and yelping and jumping earnestly, eager to feel your eyes upon it.

  1. It?s revised, corrected, emended, updated.
  2. Kindle books don?t get dog-eared from repeated reading, the way your trade paperback copy has.

Pakistani girls defy the Taliban, welcome home friends hurt in shooting

MINGORA, Pakistan - For one month the dreams kept coming. The voice, the shots, the blood. Her friend Malala slumped over.

Shazia Ramazan, 13, who was wounded by the same Taliban gunman who shot her friend Malala Yousufzai, returned home last week after a month in a hospital, where she had to relearn how to use her left arm and hand. Memories of the Taliban bullets that ripped into her remain, but she is welcoming the future.

"For a long time it seemed fear was in my heart. I couldn't stop it," she said. "But now I am not afraid," she added, self-consciously rubbing her left hand where a bullet pierced straight through just below the thumb.

Now Shazia and her friend Kainat Riaz, who was also shot, return to school for the first time since the Oct. 8 attack when a Taliban gunman opened fire on Malala outside the Khushal School for Girls, wounding Shazia and Kainat in the frenzy of bullets.

The Taliban targeted Malala because of her outspoken and relentless objection to the group's regressive interpretation of Islam that keeps women at home and bars girls from school.

Malala is still undergoing treatment and unable to come back. But among her friends in her hometown of Mingora in the idyllic Swat Valley, she is a hero.

"Malala was very brave and she was always friendly with everyone. We are proud of her," said the 16-year-old Kainat, wrapped in a large purple shawl and sitting on a traditional rope bed. Her mother Manawar, a health worker, sat by her side, praised her daughter's bravery and with a smile said: "She gets her courage from me." Although conservative and refusing to have her picture taken, Kainat's mother slammed attacks on girls' education and warned Pakistan will fail if girls are not educated.

Quick to laugh, Kainat ? who comes from a long line of educators in her family ? looked forward to returning to school. "I want to study. I am not afraid," she said.

The authorities however are not taking any chances. Armed policemen have been deployed to both Shazia's and Kainat's home and will escort them both to school.

Kainat's home is hidden behind high walls with 8- foot-high steel gates, tucked away in a neighbourhood of brown square cement buildings. A foul smelling sewer runs the length of the street where armed policemen patrol, eyeing everyone suspiciously.

Outside Shazia's home, a policeman wearing a bullet proof vest sits on a plastic garden chair with a Kalashnikov resting across his knees. Three policemen patrol a nearby narrow street that is flanked by roaring open fires where vats of hot oil boil and sticky sweets are made and sold.

Shazia, who has ambitions to become an army doctor, is a stubborn teenager. She doesn't want the police escort.

"They say I need the police. But I say I don't need any police," she said, pushing her glasses firmly back on her nose. "I don't want the police to come with me to school because then I will stand out from the other students. But I shouldn't."

At their school, the students are quick to attack the Taliban and display a giant poster of Malala. The school, which has more than 500 students, only closed its doors briefly at the height of the Taliban's hold on the region in 2008 and early 2009. It was then that Malala began to blog, recording her unhappiness with Taliban edicts ordering girls out of school.

Although she was barely 9 years old then, Shazia remembers those days.

"Times were very bad. Girls were hiding their books under their burqas. Compared to then, now is a very good time," she said, her pink shawl covering her head. "We are strong."

Both the army and the police are deployed outside the school, whose name means "happy," and journalists were not permitted to pass its black iron gate until last week when an Associated Press reporter and photographer were allowed inside. Authorities feared drawing attention, but the students within seemed unconcerned, often offering words of support for Malala and saying they weren't afraid to come to school.

Even the shiest among them would whisper in a friend's ear to say: "Tell her I will not stop studying."

Each morning the school principal gave the students a progress report on Malala's condition.

"She is getting better every day and she asks about all of us and what we are doing," said 15-year-old Mahnoor, one of Malala's close friends. "When it happened we just cried and prayed. We weren't worried for ourselves. We were just worried for her."

Twelve-year-old Emar said of the Taliban: "They are thinking that she is a girl and she cannot do anything. They are thinking that only boys can do things. They are wrong. Girls can do anything."

In a strong voice and speaking in English, Gulranga Ali, 17, said students have "gotten courage from her (Malala) and everyone is attending school. No one is staying home." She said the attack has turned the country against extremists and "now every girl and child is saying 'I want to be Malala.'"

Malala's father says the family will return to Pakistan after his daughter is well enough.

But even her classmates worry for her safety.

"I don't think she will come for education anymore in Swat. She will not be safe here. Now she is a celebrity," said Gulranga.

There is also a deepening concern that Malala's attacker has not been arrested, that the outrage her shooting generated throughout Pakistan has subsided without substantive changes and that fear will prevent real change.

Ahmed Saeed, a close friend of Malala's father, said politicians and Pakistan's military establishment still have to decide if they will support Malala's worldview or that of the Taliban. Saeed said the teenager will have another operation in three months to reconstruct her skull but that she is talking and walking "and gossiping with her family."

In what has been cheered as a first step toward compulsory education for both boys and girls in Pakistan, Parliament last week introduced legislation making it a crime to keep a child at home. Offending parents can be fined upward of $500.

Still, earlier this month the Taliban attacked on a busload of girls returning from school in the tribal regions, throwing acid in their faces. In a statement, the Taliban accused the girls of embracing the West through education.

"I don't know if this has changed Pakistan," Shazia's father said of the shooting. Still, he wants his daughter to continue at school.

"Now I want to be an example to other girls," Shazia said. "They (Taliban) can't stop us from going to school."

West Side women encouraged to seek screening, exams for breast ...

Stacie Knock waited a year before seeking treatment for an unusual lump in her breast. She said she was terrified, and she didn?t have?health insurance, so she didn?t see?a?doctor.

That was two years ago, and because she was 37 at the time, she had not yet had a mammogram, which is recommended at age 40.

While?Knock did eventually receive treatment? for stage III breast cancer and is alive today to tell her story, it could have ended differently.?Early stage cancers?have a better prognosis than later stages. That?s why?West Side health professionals encourage women to take advantage of available resources to catch cancer early and increase chances of survival.

?It?s not typical that women under 40 would get breast cancer. If they do, it tends to be a very aggressive type of cancer, so that?s why we?re really encouraging women with this whole breast health effort to just really pay attention,? said Carole Brite, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Illinois.

A recent American?Association for Cancer Research study?found that African-American women have a?48 percent?greater chance of dying?from the disease within the first three years than white women, and Brite says the rate is unusually high in Chicago.

?There?s a really strange phenomenon in Chicago. The breast cancer mortality rate for black women is higher here in Chicago than anywhere else in the country,? Brite said.

Like Knock, many women don?t seek screening, that?s why health organizations on the West Side, including?Planned Parenthood?s Austin Health Center, the Westside Health Authority and Loretto Hospital,?are offering free mammograms or referring women to places that offer the service.

?It is really important for the Austin community that women have access to clinical breast exams and mammography because of the fact that death rate among African-American women is so much higher,? Brite said.

The Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force is offering the first 500 women of color free mammograms during the month of November.? Appointments are required and more information is available at the website.

Planned Parenthood?s Austin Health Center, 5937 West Chicago Ave., offers breast exams and refers women for mammograms to one of their diagnostic partners, such as West Town ?Neighborhood Health Center, 2418 W. Division St. This center offers free mammograms for women over 40.

The Westside Health Authority?s Every Woman Counts! Breast Health Program was funded to help educate and empower women on Chicago?s West Side about early detection. They work closely with women from Austin and the East and West Garfield Park neighborhoods, stepping in as a navigator for access to health care for free or low-cost screening, mammograms and follow-up services.

Their center?s Department of Health Promotion works closely with women 40 and older, who are either uninsured or underinsured.

?When they go to the doctor they only have a limited amount of time to even interact with a doctor,? said Odette Alleyne, program coordinator for breast and health.

?I get them into a room together and we talk about the myths, the facts, the do?s, the don?ts,? Alleyne said.

The department recruits the women from outreach events, such as health fairs and workshops, and brings them together in a comfortable, learning environment where they can discuss their fears and have breast health questions addressed.

Many black women tell the center they waited to get a mammogram because they were afraid,?Alleyne said.

Alleyne said the facility hosts?monthly workshops, special events and free transportation to hospitals for health screenings.

She also puts together a trip called Mammogram Day for the women to visit hospitals outside of their neighborhood.

?I take the women to hospitals outside the neighborhood, just so they get a different feel of how the different hospitals operate. Because of course, everybody knows how Cook County operates,? Alleyne said.

Alleyne said taking women to other hospitals puts them in a different environment and helps them relax.

?Taking them as a group kind of allows them to not have that fear that most of the women, the minority woman, have regarding mammograms,? she said.

Dr. Sandy Goldberg of A Silver Lining Foundation has recently partnered with Loretto Hospital, 645 S. Central Ave., to increase breast health awareness. She said women who do not have insurance or are underinsured can qualify for free mammograms all year long. Women under 40, who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, need a note from their primary care physician.

Stackie Knock encourages women to schedule check-ups before they turn 40-years-old because in her case, age did not stop the cancer cells from forming. She said if?you find a lump,?go to a doctor immediately.

Knock said it was a boyfriend who confirmed she did have an unusual lump.

?If I had not had that man in my life, who was familiar with me, I probably would have found out later, to be honest. I was afraid of this,? Knock said.

When she knew she could not wait any longer, she said she went to Planned Parenthood because after moving back from California to Illinois, she no longer met her health insurance requirements.

?I sat on it for a year?. I sat on it for awhile because I was scared to death,? she said.

After her visit with Planned Parenthood, she had her first mammogram and then a biopsy. Knock required both radiation and chemotheraphy treatment, which she completed in January.

?Do not be paralyzed in fear. Knowledge is power, [that?s] what my momma has always taught me. That is the truth. If I had gone in the year before, maybe I wouldn?t have had to have a year and a half of chemotherapy. I procrastinated because I was scared and the reality is, it grew to Stage 3 in the meantime,? she said.

Is Social Media The Magic Bullet To Promote - Small Business Trends

Social media is considered a powerful marketing tool across a wide range of industries. For authors, especially those who self-publish or use small publishers, promoting self published books with social media can be a great way to reach out to potential readers without all the added cost of advertising or in-person book tours.

But recently, some have denounced the use of social media for self-published authors, saying that it doesn?t actually lead to book sales.

While social media on its own might not lead to best selling status, it can help authors build brand recognition and lead to sales as part of a larger marketing strategy.

Well, who better to ask for insight than those that have gone through the process themselves?

We?ve questioned several authors about their experiences using social media to promote their self-published books and we?ve provided their insights in the following slideshow.

promoting self published books?While social media may not be ?the magic bullet,? it is certainly a powerful modern day method for building relationships, sharing ideas, and doing business. Adding online social networking to one?s networking activities will open doors and provide access to many new audiences.

When it came time to promote my most recent book, as all authors, I had a decision to make as to how I would go about promoting my book. I could go the traditional route and purchase thousands of dollars worth of books or take out expensive ads promoting in-person book signings and events. Or, I could go with contemporary book marketing strategies and tap into the power of social networking.

I elected the latter and experienced great success doing so. By promoting my book launch via a virtual book tour along with announcements and discussions on the social networks, my book became an Amazon bestseller within two weeks of publication. By continuing to foster relationships and participate in conversations on the social networks I have been able to build a powerful network of fans, customers, and colleagues while developing a successful online business.?

promoting self published books?According to a report in the Washington Post, the average person reads just seven books per year. That means that we are highly selective about what we read, so authors need to work hard to demonstrate that their books are worth landing on someone?s limited reading list.

That?s where social media comes in because it helps authors build a loyal audience.

To provide value on social media means that you share content that meets the needs and interests of your target audience. If you?re a time management consultant, for example, then good content to share would be tips for managing email, projects, and other time challenges.

It?s all about appealing to your target audience so that they want to pay attention to everything you have to say on social media.

For me, that loyalty leads to book sales, registrations for events I host, investments in my publishing and marketing services, corporate sponsorships, and other opportunities.

Social media can also drive traffic to your website, help you build brand recognition, and be a great place to establish strategic relationships ? all very valuable for business.?

promoting self published books?You have just published your tome. How do you sell it? One prominent strategy is social media. But remember that every sales strategy requires work.

When we recently published books with small publishers, our strategy was to use Twitter and Facebook at the launch. This worked quite successfully as it generated enough sales to put our books onto the Amazon best seller lists.

You must identify why your book is unique. You must make it stand out. You need to create a reason why people should buy your book. Unique viewpoints, style and/or content are some of the ways to create this uniqueness.

Take examples out of your book to make points that are designed to elicit strong reactions and engage potential readers.

If you are to be successful you will need a total marketing plan. Social media is just one part. If you can get your social media campaign to go viral, you can reach an astounding number of people at essentially zero cost. Then, you stand a chance of having successful book sales.?

promoting self published books?The two important things to recognize about self-publishing are that it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. What works for one author may not work for the next, but all authors should have one thing in common ? to create the most professional book possible.

When it comes to marketing, there are also a lot of options. The strategies an author uses depends on why they wrote the book in the first place. Not every published author does it for the money or even the recognition but if selling is a factor, social media is just one of the options.

However, even if an author has a large following, it does not guarantee sales.

Social media is, in part, a numbers game. But to really make it work, you have to connect with people and give them a reason to support you, buy your book, or recommend you to others. Social media allows people to have conversations as you might in person, if you had the opportunity.

It?s important to let people see who you really are and not just be another small business person with a service to provide.?

promoting self published books?One of the elements people forget is that promoting online (social media, blogs, etc.) isn?t about sales ? it?s about exposure. So, to try and correlate sales to, let?s say, a Facebook ad isn?t really productive.

People need more exposure to something, seven exposures according to most marketing experts, so how will you get these?

Yes, there are a lot of self-published books out there, and you bet there?s a ton of competition. But if you know what your audience wants and if you create a book and then a message that speaks to them, candidly the rest isn?t rocket science.

Now that you know what they want, where are they? If they aren?t on Pinterest, why bother? You might find a better home on LinkedIn, for example.

Market and message, two of the biggest and brightest elements to any marketing endeavor. Once you have those it?s about exposure, exposure, exposure. Get in front of enough of the right people and yes, it is sort of a Field of Dreams.

They will come.?

promoting self published books?Social media was a major promotional tool for my books winning awards in the 2010 and 2012 Small Business Trends Small Business Book Awards. I used Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, and YouTube every day during the campaigns to contact friends and followers and ask for their votes.

I also combined media. ?For example, I posted YouTube videos about my books and asked for votes on each of the other social media channels.

I made a point of personally ?liking? and responding to every comment on Facebook that people made in response to my posts and thanked them for their comment and asked again for them to vote each day and spread the word.

Clearly it worked as 31 Days to Greeting Card Marketing Mastery was a marketing category and overall winner in 2010 and 31 Days to Network Marketing Mastery was a marketing category winner (and a near miss as an overall winner) in 2012!?

promoting self published books?Social media helps me sell books. I used Facebook several times a week to promote 31 Days to Improve Your Vocabulary. As a lifelong word-lover, it?s daily practice for me to note new words for my posts. My only promotion is a vocab ?word of the day? posting on my Facebook profile with a link to the book on Amazon.

I mix my Facebook posts about 50/50 with promotion and lifestyle/social content. Each ?word of the day? post is usually shared several times by other Facebook users and ?liked? by 6-12 people. Those aren?t big numbers and it?s not a mega-selling book, however the sales keep growing with more than 60 sold during July 2012.

If I were making a living only through selling books I?d promote more actively and diversely, but using Facebook is quick, easy, and even fun, and I can see the results in my monthly royalty check.?
