Texas looks to build on Alamo Bowl win

SAN ANTONIO -- In the end the balloons fell from the sky and swirled around the jubilant, and yes relieved, Texas players and coaches.

A tumultuous season on and off the field was over with an ending that, while not to script, featured enough feel-good moments that it was clear, at least on this day, nobody would burst their bubble.

And now, following a 31-27 win over No. 13 Oregon State (9-4) in front of 65,277 fans at the Valero Alamo Bowl Saturday, the wonder is if that bubble in on the rise.

That's long been the claim of Texas coach Mack Brown. This youth-laden team was one built for the future, Brown continually contended in the face of increasing criticism. The future started 15 minutes early for Texas. The No. 23 Longhorns (9-4), an underdog who played the part to Tony-worthy accolades for three quarters, showed fourth-quarter mettle and moxie rarely seen from a program whose heartbeat had been faint for several seasons.

Finally there was a team coming together. For three years and three quarters there were questions if this collection of players, coaches and the person at the top was right for Texas football. One win won't end those questions. It will quiet them if only because of the way that win came about. Texas had not won after trailing by 10 points all season. The Longhorns trailed 27-17 after David Ash threw an ill-timed interception in the third. That's when Texas folds, Bevo shrugs and the Longhorns start talking about their next recruiting class.

Not this time. The words they had thrown around -- commitment, earn the right, swagger, never quit -- became tangible feelings and were, for the first time, manifested on the field in that fourth quarter.

India gang-rape victim dies in hospital

The 23-year-old who was gang-raped in New Delhi and thrown from a bus has died from her injuries in Singapore, where she was being treated. NBC's Natalie Morales reports.

By NBC News and wire services

SINGAPORE ? A 23-year-old Indian woman who was gang-raped and severely beaten on a bus in New Delhi died Saturday at a Singapore hospital, after her horrific ordeal galvanized Indians to demand greater protection from sexual violence that impacts thousands of women daily, but often goes unreported.

The victim who has not been identified,?"passed away peacefully" with her family and officials of the Indian embassy by her side," said Kelvin Loh, the chief executive of Mount Elizabeth hospital where she had been treated since Thursday. "The Mount Elizabeth Hospital team of doctors, nurses and staff join her family in mourning her loss," he said in a statement.

The woman and a male friend were traveling in a public bus after watching a film on the evening of Dec. 16 when they were attacked by six men who took turns raping her. They also beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into her body resulting in severe organ damage. Both of them were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.

?

?

The woman was airlifted to Singapore on Dec. 26 for specialist treatment, but she had remained in extremely critical condition, Loh said.

The victim had already undergone three abdominal operations before arriving in Singapore, where her condition on Thursday was described as "extremely critical."

Photos: Police try to temper outrage over gang rape

"Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth Hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days," said Loh on Saturday. "She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome."

New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in the country rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

The incident?caught Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government off guard and triggered a blame game between politicians and the police.

"We share the anguish and anger with the country over this heinous crime," Singh told reporters on Friday. "Our prayers are with the brave young girl and best possible medical care is being provided to her."

The South African Press Association quotes presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj as saying Saturday that he has no new information on 94-year-old Mandela, who was released from a hospital on Wednesday. Broader background checks and denial criteria could help prevent mass shooting catastrophes, experts say

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Garen Wintemute, a leading authority on gun violence prevention and an emergency medicine physician at UC Davis, believes broader criteria for background checks and denials on gun purchases can help prevent future firearm violence, including mass shooting catastrophes such as those that occurred at Sandy Hook, Aurora, Virginia Tech and Columbine.

"To reduce the number of deaths and injuries from firearms in the United States, we need to develop policies that require background checks for all firearm purchases, including private-party sales -- the most important source of firearms for criminal buyers and others who are prohibited from purchasing guns," said Wintemute, director of the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program and inaugural Susan P. Baker-Stephen P. Teret Chair in Violence Prevention at UC Davis.

"We need to prevent individuals with a previous conviction for a misdemeanor violent crime, such as assault and battery, from purchasing or possessing a firearm. We also need to develop better data and criteria that allow us to distinguish between those with a treatable mental disorder who do not have a history of violence from those with a history of violence or substance abuse," he said.

Wintemute's views posted on the Online First section of the New England Journal of Medicine website as a Perspective article, entitled "Tragedy's Legacy," on December 26, 2012. It also will appear in the journal's January 31, 2013 print edition.

According to Wintemute, the United States represents only 5 percent of the world's population, but it owns more than 40 percent of all firearms that are in civilians' hands. In addition, he believes that policies governing gun purchases and use have allowed the widest possible array of firearms to be available to the widest group of people, for use under the widest array of conditions. Wintemute specifically cites the "Stand Your Ground" laws, enacted at the state level, as dangerous experiments that have been used to legitimize shootings that once were considered to be murder.

Wintemute emphasizes taking a broad approach.

"It may be impossible to predict the next mass shooting incident, and we cannot expect interventions designed for specific circumstances to eliminate the risk of firearm violence. But we can change our firearms laws, based on existing evidence, to reduce harm and better ensure public safety," he said.

"Some 40 percent of all firearm transactions, for example, involve private-party sellers, who are not required to keep records and cannot obtain a background check," Wintemute said. "We need policies that prevent these quick, anonymous and undocumented sales. We also need policies that deny gun purchases to those who we know are at high risk for violence."

Wintemute's research has shown that among persons who purchase firearms legally, those with a previous conviction for a misdemeanor violent crime are roughly nine times as likely as those with no criminal history to be arrested for a violent crime later. For those with two or more such prior convictions, he found the risk increases by a factor of 10 to 15. In addition, studies have shown that firearm owners who abuse alcohol are more likely than other owners to engage in violence-related firearm behavior.

"We know that comprehensive background checks and expanded denial criteria are feasible and effective, because they are in place in many states and have been evaluated," Wintemute said. "In California, the denial policy reduced the risk of violence and firearm-related crime by 23 percent among those whose purchases were denied. But we need to broaden these and other effective state-level regulations to eliminate the flow of firearms from states where laws are lax to states where laws are stricter."

Wintemute also notes that proposals for comprehensive background checks and denials for misdemeanor violence and for alcohol abuse enjoy broad public support, including among firearm owners. Survey data come from Wintemute's own research as well as a series of public polls conducted for the Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

"While the individual circumstances of the mass shooting massacres in the U.S. are different, we can only change the outcome if we confront the challenge of unchecked and easy access to firearms," Wintemute said. "Strengthening our background check and denial policies for firearm purchases will not eliminate firearm violence, but they can reduce it."

Deal reached to avert East coast port strike ... for now

(Reuters) - The union representing nearly 15,000 dockworkers at U.S. Atlantic and Gulf Coast seaports stretching from Boston to Corpus Christi, Texas, reached a tentative contract deal with shipping companies on Friday, averting a strike that threatened to wreak havoc on the U.S. economy.

The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance clinched a deal in federally-mediated talks less than two days before a strike deadline set by the union to coincide with expiration of the contract on Sunday.

The threatened walkout would have brought container cargo operations to a halt at 15 ports along the Eastern seaboard and Gulf Coast, marking the first such work stoppage in 35 years. Friday's announcement came hours after the White House urged the parties to settle their dispute.

Under Friday's deal, the two sides agreed to extend the terms of their expiring labor pact for 30 more days while negotiators finalize details of their settlement, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service said in a statement.

The breakthrough came as the parties agreed "in principle" on the contentious issue of "container royalties," or bonus payments earned by ILA dockworkers based on the tonnage of cargo moved through their respective ports.

The new contract does not eliminate the royalty payments, as the shippers had demanded, according to Benny Holland, an executive vice president for the ILA.

"The royalty will stay intact. We have worked out a formula for it," he said in an interview. He did not elaborate and the shippers declined to comment. No further details were disclosed in the government's statement.

LONG-TERM AGREEMENT AWAITED

Established in 1960, the royalty payments to ILA workers are based on the tons of container cargo that move through a port. That tonnage has risen from 50 million tons in 1996 to 110 million tons last year, according to the alliance.

Total payments last year were $211 million, according to the USMX, or an average of $15,500 per worker.

The original idea of the royalty payments was to protect longshoremen from wage losses expected as a result of "containerization," in which more and more goods are packed in the now-familiar 20- and 40-foot long boxes. Those take less manpower to offload than the less-standardized containers they replaced.

The two sides also fought over the guaranteed eight-hour workday in the current contract as well as the seven-man "lashing gang." Lashing crews, or gangs, secure the cargo containers to the vessel using metal lashing rods to keep them from moving while the vessel is at sea. The maritime alliance wanted to eliminate each.

A new long-term agreement has an 80 percent chance of happening by January 28, Capital Alpha Partners analyst Loren Smith said in a research note.

The temporary agreement comes as labor forces felt emboldened by recent victories by other unions across the United States. At the same time, shipping companies and port operators have been using more automation, but have seen profits shrink.

The Baltic Dry index, which tracks the cost to ship materials overseas, is down 55 percent in the past year and currently trading at levels it has not seen in a decade.

(AP Photo/ Evan Vucci)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama returned to the White House on Thursday from a vacation shortened by government gridlock while Democrats and Republicans snarled across a partisan divide and showed no sign of compromise to avoid year-end tax increases and spending cuts.

Adding to the woes confronting the middle class was a pending spike of $2-per-gallon or more in milk prices if lawmakers failed to pass farm legislation by year's end.

White House aides disputed reports that Obama was sending lawmakers a scaled-down plan to avoid the "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and spending cuts. They gave no indication he would invite congressional leaders to a White House meeting either late Thursday or possibly on Friday.

Top Senate leaders said they remain ready to seek a last-minute agreement. But a little more than four days from the deadline, there was no legislation pending in either the House or the Senate to prevent the tax hikes and spending cuts that economists say could send the economy into a recession.

Far from conciliatory, the rhetoric was confrontational and at times unusually personal.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused House Speaker John Boehner of running a dictatorship, citing his refusal to call a vote on legislation to keep taxes steady for most while letting them rise at upper incomes. The bill "would pass overwhelmingly," Reid predicted, and said the Ohio Republican won't change his mind because he fears it might cost him re-election as speaker when the new Congress convenes next week.

Boehner seems "to care more about keeping his speakership than keeping the nation on a firm financial footing," he said in remarks on the Senate floor.

A few hours later, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell expressed frustration and blamed the standoff on Obama and the Democrats. "Republicans have bent over backwards. We stepped way, way out of our comfort zone," he said, referring to GOP offers to accept higher tax rates on some taxpayers.

"We wanted an agreement, but we had no takers. The phone never rang and so here we are five days from the new year and we might finally start talking," McConnell said.

Still, he warned: "Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything the Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff."

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Boehner, responded in a similar vein to Reid's comments. "Harry Reid should talk less and legislate more if he wants to avert the fiscal cliff. The House has already passed legislation to do so," he said, referring to a measure that extends existing cuts at all income levels.

Addressing the GOP rank and file by conference call, Boehner said the next move is up to the Senate, which has yet to act on House-passed bills to retain expiring tax cuts at all income levels and replace across-the-board spending cuts with targeted savings aimed largely at social programs.

"The House will take this action on whatever the Senate can pass - but the Senate must act," he said, according to a participant in the call.

At the same time, Boehner told Republican lawmakers the House would convene on Sunday evening.

The risk of higher milk prices stems from the possibility that existing farm programs will expire at year's end, and neither chamber of Congress has scheduled a vote on even a temporary extension to prevent a spike. There have been unverified estimates that the cost to consumers of a gallon of milk could double without action by Congress.

The president flew home from Hawaii overnight after speaking with top congressional leaders.

Before leaving the White House last Friday, the president had called on lawmakers to pass scaled-down legislation that prevents tax increases for the middle class, raises rates at upper incomes and renews expiring unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. He said he still supports a more sweeping measure to include spending cuts to reduce deficits, but said they could wait until the new year.

That capped an unpredictable week in which Boehner pivoted away from comprehensive deficit reduction talks with Obama to an aborted attempt to push legislation through the House that retained existing tax levels except above $1 million. Anti-tax Republicans rebelled at raising rates on million-dollar earners, and Boehner backpedaled and canceled the planned vote.

Without congressional action, current tax rates will expire on Dec. 31, resulting in a $536 billion tax increase over a decade that would touch nearly all Americans. In addition, the military and other federal departments would have to begin absorbing about $110 billion in spending cuts.

Failure to avoid the "fiscal cliff" doesn't necessarily mean tax increases and spending cuts would become permanent, since the new Congress could pass legislation cancelling them retroactively after it begins its work next year.

But gridlock through the end of the year would mark a sour beginning to a two-year extension of divided government that resulted from last month's elections in which Obama won a new term and Republicans retained their majority in the House.

The tax issue in particular has been Obama's first test of muscle after his re-election in November. He ran for a new term calling for higher taxes on the wealthy, and postelection public opinion polls show continued support for his position.

Boehner's decision to support higher rates on million-dollar earners marked a significant break with long-standing GOP orthodoxy, but the resistance among his rank and file so far has trumped him as well as any mandate the president claims.

(AP) ? Americans bought new homes last month at the fastest pace in more than two and a half years, further evidence of a sustained housing recovery.

Sales of new homes rose 4.4 percent in November from October to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 377,000, the Commerce Department said Thursday. That's the fastest pace since April 2010, when a federal tax credit boosted sales.

New-home sales have also increased 15.3 percent over the past year, although the improvement comes from depressed levels. Sales remain below the 700,000 that economists consider healthy.

Sales in the Northeast rebounded in November from disruptions caused by Superstorm Sandy. Sales in the region increased 12.5 percent last month. That followed a decline of 27.3 percent in October.

The housing market has steadily improved this year, helped by stable job gains and record-low mortgage rates. More people are looking to buy or rent a home after living with relatives or friends during and immediately after the Great Recession.

Another big reason for the rebound: The excess supply of homes that were built during the housing boom has finally thinned out. Only 149,000 new homes were for sale at the end of last month, according to the report. That's just above a record low of 143,000 in August.

The increase in the supply of new homes for sale was the first sustained rise in five years. Economists said that reflects growing optimism among builders that the housing recovery will endure.

Builder confidence rose this month to its highest level in 6? years, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo survey released last week.

The pace of home construction is nearly 22 percent higher than a year earlier, according to government data. Builders are on track this year to start work on the most homes in four years.

There have been other signs of a recovery in the housing market.

Home prices are also increasing. The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller national home price index released Wednesday increased 4.3 percent in October compared with a year ago. That's the largest year-over-year increase in two and a half years. And prices rose for the 12-month period in 18 of the 20 cities tracked by the index.

Sales of previously occupied homes rose to the highest level in three years in November, the National Association of Realtors said last week.

Though new homes represent only a small portion of the housing market, they have a disproportionate impact on the economy. Each home built creates an average of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in tax revenue, according to statistics from the National Association of Home Builders.

Shy of the Social Media Spotlight? Get Over It. - Dorie Clark ...

I recently taught a workshop on crisis communication at a top business school. Afterward, a mid-career executive came up to me with a question. But it wasn't about how to handle rogue employees, or industrial accidents, or philandering CEOs. Instead, it concerned a far more personal sense of crisis: her overwhelming fear of public criticism if she became active on social media. She was an accomplished professional; she'd run an environmental consultancy for the past six years. And she knew some kind of web presence was necessary for her credibility. "You have to have something up there for people to find you," she said. "Having nothing would be bad." But her web presence was spartan, a throwback to the "Web 1.0" days of static, brochure-like sites. Anything else, she feared, might risk opprobrium.

She isn't the only executive I've met who shares this concern. Sure, some professionals hesitate to get onboard social media because they're worried about the time it takes, or running afoul of company policies, or simply because business is so robust, they don't feel they need to. But a healthy subset are genuinely afraid that if they're perceived as seeking attention, they'll be quickly put back in their place. This fall, I coached the senior executive team at a large charitable foundation. One leader ? a true expert in her field ? raised a stream of polite objections to the idea of increasing her social media presence. Finally, I pressed her: "What exactly is your concern?" She wilted slightly and took a deep breath. "I'm not really comfortable putting myself out there," she said.

It's ironic, of course. We can all cite examples of social media bloviators we wish would shut up. And meanwhile, you have knowledgeable professionals who are too afraid to share their insights with the world. It's true that the World Wide Web of the mid-90s was a Wild West; there's a reason AOL thrived for years as a "walled garden" that protected people from idiots spewing ad hominem insults in chatrooms. But with the decline of anonymity on the Web (hat tip to Mark Zuckerberg, who famously declared that "Having two identities for yourself is an example of lack of integrity") and the rise of using the Internet for professional purposes, it's much less likely that anyone ? especially someone writing intelligently about their profession, rather than a hot button political issue ? will get "flamed" these days.

The other fallacy, quickly revealed to those who do start blogging or tweeting, is that hordes of people will be anxiously following what you write. In fact, the early days of social media use can be quite lonely. Is anyone paying attention? Why am I spending so much energy on this? Is this a complete waste of time? I (jokingly) try to convince these executives that it would actually be a good problem to have if they started getting hate mail because it would mean they were hitting a chord with the public. Of course, that's no comfort to a shy person who abhors conflict or confrontation.

But the truth is, a far more likely scenario is that for the first few weeks or months you're active online, you probably won't get any comments, much less negative ones. And that's actually good, as I wrote about in my recent HBR post "Build Your Reputation the Rachael Ray Way." A necessary step in developing a powerful reputation is spending time "toiling in the wilderness" and perfecting your craft and ideas while few people are paying attention. That fact turns out to reassure many of the apprehensive executives I work with, who realize that creating "public" content doesn't mean it will immediately be dissected and critiqued by the entire world.

Finally, since the spotlight feels so uncomfortable to these leaders, I advise them to kickstart their social media presence by shining the light on others. Presenting themselves as experts (even though they are) often strikes them as presumptuous or pretentious. But writing "how to" or "here's what you should do" blog posts isn't the only option. Instead, you can interview other thinkers you admire, or write about good work in your industry. I encouraged the foundation executive to retweet positive stories from the nonprofits she funds, and the environmental consultant to create a podcast featuring conversations with talented colleagues. The act of curation ? not just creation ? also positions you as someone credible, and has the added benefit of tightening your connections with other leaders in your field.

It's hard enough for diffident professionals to "put themselves out there" in the regular context of work. Social media makes it even worse ? a risky, high-speed word-of-mouth machine they feel they can't control. But it's also, as my student admitted, increasingly essential. Having nothing, or only some paltry wisps, representing you online now marks you as out of touch (she's not even on LinkedIn?), inconsequential (what, she never did anything important enough to be written about?), or even suspicious (why isn't there any evidence she ever worked there?). It can be hard to adjust to the new workplace reality, where everyone is expected to use an online megaphone. But if you think of it as an opportunity to raise the discourse, focus on meaningful ideas, and draw attention to worthy people and causes, even the most wary might learn to love social media.

Game Theory: A Playwright on the Art of Video Games - NYTimes.com

So it?s the end of 2012, and it feels like gaming is pushing through its creative adolescence. There are glimpses of what it might become. Thus, for games to take their rightful place among other creative works it?s important to ask what they do that other forms cannot.

For me, there?s a sort of identification with your character that other media will never be able to replicate. A game makes a player its subject, while the tyranny of the director?s point of view in film and the author?s withholding of detail in fiction both place the viewer as an observer in the world. Of course, in film and fiction emotions are elicited and characters inspire empathy, but the viewer recognizes? she is following a protagonist that is ?not me.? The bridge of empathy comes from the audience bringing their own life experience to the narrative. Gaming can break down that division between revealer and observer, through making the player complicit in and responsible for the choices made. This allows a sense of one single, unseparated narrative, one emotional journey. It is the difference between being told something and coming to realize it yourself.

Game Theory

Chris Suellentrop, Stephen Totilo, Kirk Hamilton and others discuss the year in video games.

The finest example this year may be?Journey, the follow-up to Thatgamecompany?s gorgeous Flower. It is an almost transcendental experience. Though designed as more of a meditation than a competition, it shows what gaming is capable of. Journey allows the player to move through a set of landscapes profound in their audio and visual beauty with no instruction, but with the momentum, disorientation and hope that emerge from any journey in life. The game captures the emotional experience through play. The choice of subject matter and its rendering would be impossible to translate to film, music or literature, coming as close to game-as-artistic-experience as I have ever known.

A sense of choice and alternate narratives has long been a way that games differentiate themselves from other works. Early PC games were often built around selecting dialogue for your protagonist from a menu, or even asking you to type your own. But this was rarely more than a way to interact with exposition. This year games have been returning to that idea but also granting real effect to those choices, using the technical and creative sophistication the last two decades have brought.

The episodic Walking Dead brilliantly feasts on player?s minds by giving them meaningful choice in dialogue and action to produce different outcomes and enhance the sense of peril. It gives this tense, satisfying zombie story a creeping sense of depth and autonomy.

Catherine, an extraordinary Japanese morality game, is just as terrifying but finds its power in the fear of commitment. Catherine, which was released in North America in 2011 before arriving in Europe in 2012, mines the emotional paralysis of a young man trying to choose between leaving and marrying his girlfriend. Its daytime segments allow the player to sit in a bar, choosing what sort of texts to send her, and at night the game turns into a frighteningly well-observed series of puzzle nightmares. It?s complex and insightful, though I was shocked at its difficulty. Even experienced gamers might want to start on the easiest setting. But it?s worth it. Particularly impressive is a level in which the single-player form changes to include Vincent, the protagonist, and his girlfriend in a fast-paced joint race to solve a puzzle. The change in game-play of suddenly having company and help on the journey, and yet twice the responsibility and risk of failure, so perfectly captures the advantages and disadvantages of being single versus being in a relationship that Catherine tips into the profound and, again, shows what it is that games can uniquely do.

In opposition to this sense of open play and choice, the lauded Max Payne 3 has a more filmic approach and leaves me underwhelmed. The lavish cut scenes, glossy slo-mo and self-important dialogue give the impression the designers are faintly annoyed that the player has to occasionally break into their world to play.

Even the brutally linear Call of Duty franchise embraced choice this year with Black Ops, a game with variation in timeline and narrative depending on certain decisions.

BioShock Infinite was disappointingly delayed, but those seeking a replacement with intense atmosphere and an intricately drawn world could do worse than Dishonored, a sort of BioShock set in a Fable universe, which I?d highly recommend.

I feel Journey is the creative achievement of the year but my personal favorite is the quirky, original Catherine, a unique game which embraces choice in its form while also showing the shadowy, paralyzing underside of our moral decisions in its content. Plus, it?s a rare game that has the guts to ask what gamers are really afraid of. Zombies? Aliens? Terrorists? Or relationships?

From Family Weekend Breaks To Business Conferences... 13th ...

The 13th Beach area in Australia is famous for quite a few reasons. No, those are not the crystal-clear azure sea, golden beaches or excellent entertainment for the whole family, although each of those is a pretty good reason on its own. However, the most important reason for the popularity of the area is probably the resorts present here, which can serve as perfect venues for family weekend breaks and business conferences alike. On one hand, vacationers are bound to love the various ways of de-stressing offered by these resorts, while on the other, event managers will love the conference centre resorts, which offer every facility that they could ever ask for.

Why 13th Beach is perfect for family weekend breaks

Family vacations are a whole lot more fun at the 13th Beach. The sea here is perfect for engaging in water sports and the sun-kissed, golden beach offers plenty of opportunities to go for a sunbath. The close proximity of 13th Beach Golf Links ensures that families wishing to hit a few birdies would not have to travel for long. There are two golf courses in the resort, the beach course and the creek course, which allows players to choose the one that closely matches their skill levels. Besides, every resort here on 13th Beach offer catered meals, quiet atmosphere to help guests relax and room service to take care of their every needs. What more could vacationer ask for?

Conference centre resorts on 13th Beach are great for any type of events

13th Beach has many conference centre resorts that help event organisers make arrangements for any kind of event. The resorts that deserve special mention here are the ones located near Geelong. Function rooms in these resorts are equipped with state of the art conferencing facilities, including high quality speakers, microphones and sound amplifiers, which allow speakers to address all delegates without straining their voices. Also, every room in conference centre resorts located in the region is equipped with broadband Internet connection, which helps organisers stream the entire event, if necessary.

Weddings organised here can be truly memorable

Wedding is among the sweetest memories of just about anyones life and resorts on 13th Beach can make those truly special. Whether the bride and groom want a small, private ceremony or a large one with hundreds of guests, resorts located in the region are always ready to serve. There is something inherently charming about getting married on the beach. The way in which resort staff takes care of the guests every needs just provides one more reason for choosing these resorts for wedding ceremonies.

13th Beach has many resorts for visitors to choose from, whether they are on family weekend breaks or attending business conferences. The top class services and facilities offered by these places at affordable rates just provide one more reason for choosing these resorts. Visitors just need to check with the reception of the resort they wish to stay in, before visiting. Resorts in the area are often packed to capacity, and not confirming vacancy prior to showing up may lead to disappointment at times.

About the Author:
James Wilson relies on 13th Beach resorts for business conferences that he organises for his clients. Even when he is on family weekend breaks, he chooses to spend time at resorts located in the region, for their flawless service and the peaceful atmosphere in the resorts.

Applied Strategic Planning Committee Holds Annual Meeting ...

December 12, 2012

ASP_annual_meeting-200The Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) Applied Strategic Planning (ASP) Committee met for its annual meeting on Wednesday, November 28 and Thursday, November 29, 2012. The meeting was facilitated by Dr. Bob Frazer of R. L. Frazer and Associates and ASP Co-Chairs Drs. John Guarente and Celeste Kong. R.L Frazer and Associates is the consulting firm that was hired by GSDM to facilitate the ASP process.

During the meeting, the group reviewed the overall ASP process along with?the core values, operational values, and mission of GSDM. Mr. Gurjinder Gill provided a review of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) monitoring process that is being used as we implement the ASP. The balanced scorecard is a strategic planning and management system that is used extensively in business and industry, government, and nonprofit organizations worldwide to align business activities to the vision and strategy of the organization, improve internal and external communications, and monitor organizational performance against strategic goals.

Also during the meeting, ASP Committee Co-Chair Dr. Celeste Kong presented the ASP Committee with an update of the environmental scan that was initially presented in 2010. An environmental scan compiles factual and subjective information on a broad spectrum of social, political, economic, and marketplace trends that may affect change either positively or negatively in an organization.? Kong also closed the meeting, ?Our first annual ASP was another successful learning experience that provided the ASPC with the necessary information to continue to move forward with our implementation process.?

Drs. Cataldo Leone, Carl McManama and David Russell then reviewed the two Curriculum Summits held to date and provided plans for the Group Practice Model that is being developed for GSDM. Then, each of the 10 goal champions reviewed progress and updated related objectives and integrated action plans (IAPs) in order to ensure that the ASP remains responsive to internal and external changes.

?I am very pleased with the progress that has been made in implementing our ASP to date and I look forward to continuing to build on the momentum that we have built,? said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. ?Under the continued direction of ASP Committee co-chairs Drs. Guarente and Kong, Implementation Team Leader Dr. Paula K. Friedman, and ASP Project Manager Mr. Gill I know that the committee and all GSDM stakeholders will continue implementation at what is truly an impressive pace.?? Co-chair Dr. John Guarente added, ?It continues to be an honor to work with such an energized group of people, that are putting our plan to work. The information shared at our?annual meeting clearly demonstrated that, together, our vision is going to be a reality.?

Find a Writing Platform and Target Audience | Speaking Of Wealth

As a professional writer, there are some critical elements of marketing your writing to keep in mind. This includes building a writing platform and identifying a target audience. These generally go hand in hand, and can help a writer identify the reader and how the reader is consuming the content.

Finding Your Writing Platform

Jason Hartman knows the importance of building a platform. A platform is essentially having an audience and having a vehicle to reach said audience. Regardless of writing medium, if you write e-books online, a blog, or fantasy novels, it?s important to build a platform before publishing. Here are some examples of writing platforms:

  • A Facebook audience.
  • A Twitter audience.
  • A social media presence.
  • A personal blog, with an audience.

As a novelist using a traditional publishing method, it would certainly help your case to tell an agent you?ve been writing a blog for a few years and in that time you?ve built a sizable group of loyal customers. This also applies to social media presence. What if you?re self-publishing or writing an e-book? Surely, you?ll make more sales if you?ve already built a large platform of followers who you can ask to buy or talk about the new book.

Though many writers are still in denial about the importance of an online presence to build a platform, the internet has become an important medium. It?s the simplest, surest way to connect with potential readers and buyers.

Finding Your Target Audience

When looking to write a novel and build a platform, there?s one important thing to ask. Who is the target audience? Essentially, what is your niche, and who is the person you?re writing for? It?s a good practice to actively picture the person you?re writing the novel for. Once that person is figured out, write for them. Said person, or people, is the target audience.

Once the target audience has been identified, it?s possible to write in a way which addresses their needs and concerns. Ask how your writing solves a specific need or want, and continue to fulfill those needs. If you?re writing nonfiction, be sure to write in a way which feels personal without talking a lot about yourself. By creating a conversational tone, the reader will feel like you really do understand them.

And remember that writing isn?t all peaches and cream. ?Read our recent article ?How to Handle Negative Reviews.? (Top Image: Flickr | Pascal Maramis)
