Rebox Renters Love Kevin James

While the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been busy doling out honorary awards to the likes of James Earl Jones, Lauren Bacall and director Robert Altman in recent years, video rental giant Redbox went in a different direction for its inaugural lifetime achievement award.

And the winner is . . .

Kevin James.

?Kevin James is the guy next door, and Redbox fans have brought him home millions of times over.? Movies starring James include Zookeeper, Grown Ups, The Dilemma and Paul Blart Mall Cop ? making him a tried-and-true favorite who makes America laugh,? Gary Cohen, SVP of Marketing and Customer Experience at Redbox, told the Daily News by email.

The 46-year-old comedian, who broke into the public eye with the sitcom ?The King of Queens? has made a lucrative career out of the type of family comedies that critics don?t particularly find very funny.

? ?Zookeeper? is a children?s comedy about talking animals that feels as if it were written by children or, perhaps, by talking animals,? wrote Daily News film critic Joe Neumaier at the time of the film?s release in July.

Customers who digest their films via Redbox?s video rental vending machines, however, didn?t seem to mind.

James? comedy ?Paul Blart: Mall Cop? was the fastest movie in Redbox history to reach 1 million rentals, according to the company.

North Korean military warns South will pay for ?hideous crimes? during mourning period

PYONGYANG (BNO NEWS) -- The North Korean military on Friday said the South will 'pay for its hideous crimes' during the mourning period for Supreme Leader Kim Jong-il and warned it may launch a retaliatory strike to 'smash the stronghold of the puppet forces.'

A statement from the National Defense Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK/North Korea) condemned the South Korean government for immediately putting its forces on alert and convening an emergency meeting following the announcement of Kim Jong-il's death.

"When the whole nation is overcome with grief over the great loss, only the South Korean puppet group committed thrice-cursed crimes," the Commission said in a long statement. "The DPRK National Defense Commission, above all, discloses before the world and the nation the truth about those crimes of the South Korean puppet group."

The Commission said the South's actions created the impression that a 'golden opportunity' had arrived to lead the North to a system change. "The South Korean authorities put the three services of the puppet army on an emergency alert and ordered them to adopt combat posture, creating a war-like atmosphere on the ground and in the seas and air," it said.

North Korea also condemned the South for spreading anti-DPRK leaflets during the mourning period and preventing certain groups and citizens from visiting Pyongyang to convey their condolences. "Traitor Lee Myung-bak spearheaded all these operations," the Commission said, referring to the South Korean president.

It added: "[Lee] sought to attain his foolish goal by taking the advantage of the mourning period, and if that fails, to lead the DPRK to 'contingency' and 'change of system'. From the olden times, it was considered inhumane to raise one's fist at the neighbor visited by misfortune and seek profits."

North Korean state-run media published a series of articles on Friday which were critical of South Korea. While threats against South Korea have been made in the past, Friday's threat was the first since Kim Jong-il's son, Kim Jong-un, took over as Supreme Leader.

"Expressing condolences and sending condolatory messages have been good manners and customs and ethical tradition peculiar to the Korean nation from the ancient times," the Commission said. "It is for this reason that we brand the evil act of the Lee group as treason bereft of elementary human reason and morality."

North Korea also reiterated again that it was not responsible for the 2010 sinking of the ROKS Cheonan, a South Korean Navy ship carrying 104 people. The incident left 46 people killed and a South Korean-led international investigation blamed a North Korean torpedo which was allegedly fired from a midget submarine.

Friday's statement further reiterated that North Korean forces only acted in 'self-defense' when it bombarded the disputed Yeonpyeong Island last year, prompting South Korea to return fire at North Korea. The artillery engagement from the North left two South Korean civilians killed while the South's return fire killed at least five people in North Korea.

The Commission said it issued Friday's statement to 'clarify' its principles in regards to South Korea, mainly because of the events during the mourning period. "As already declared, the DPRK will have no dealings with the Lee Myung-bak group of traitors forever," it said. "To keep company with them is a disgrace for the clear and honest-minded Korean nation as they are ignorant in politics, vulgar in morals and lack elementary human nature."

The military warned: "We will surely force the group of traitors to pay for its hideous crimes committed at the time of the great national misfortune. The veritable sea of tears shed by the army and people of the DPRK will turn into that of retaliatory fire to burn all the group of traitors to the last one and their wailing into a roar of revenge to smash the stronghold of the puppet forces."

Despite having no independent media organizations in North Korea, the Commission also criticized South Korean media outlets for allegedly broadcasting false reports, fabrication, speculation and assumptions. "The conservative media of South Korea [..] oblivious of their mission to be a fair speaker for the public and pioneer of true public," it said.

"Taking this opportunity, we solemnly declare with confidence that the South Korean puppets and foolish politicians around the world should not expect any change from the DPRK," the Commission said.

However, the statement concluded that the North Korean government will 'keep to the path' of improving North-South relations and achieving peace and prosperity. "The world will see how the army and people of the DPRK win the final victory after turning their sorrow and tears into strength and courage, closely rallied behind the dear respected Kim Jong Un," it concluded.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula, which is officially still at war, have been at critical since the two incidents last year. The 1950-1953 Korean War, which left millions of people killed, ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.

Syrian troops kill 3 Lebanese in border incident

Lebanese security officials say Syrian troops opened fire at a car that crossed illegally into northern Lebanon, killing three Lebanese men.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

The shooting came late Tuesday as Arab League observers started a mission in Syria aimed at stopping nine months of bloody clashes during an uprising against the regime.

Some Syrians have fled to Lebanon to escape the fighting, and Syria has complained that weapons are smuggled across its borders. It was not immediately clear if the shooting was related to the uprising in Syria.

Such incidents are not uncommon on the border, since many Lebanese and Syrians cross the border illegally. Several Syrians and Lebanese were killed or wounded in recent border incidents.

Iowa voters hold sway over how president is chosen

The Iowa caucuses draw outsized attention from politicians and the news media because they are first and can put a symbolic political wind behind the sails of the top finishers, making them more attractive not only to voters but also to donors who finance campaigns. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya, File)

(AP) ? All across Iowa next Tuesday, tens of thousands of Republican voters will travel through a chilly Midwestern night to the warmth of a local church or gymnasium for caucus meetings to select presidential candidates, the first voting in the 2012 election campaign.

These Midwestern, mostly white voters hardly resemble America as a whole, and their voting system puzzles most people. Yet Iowa holds substantial sway over how the nation chooses the president.

"Iowa will choose the next president of the United States in their early caucuses," Republican hopeful Michele Bachmann said recently. "This is the cannon shot."

The caucuses ? essentially community meetings ? have served as a launching pad to the nomination, and often to the White House, for the past 40 years, though they've been around since the 1840s. Candidates tend to lavish attention on Iowa, hoping that a good showing will give them a burst of publicity to improve their chances in New Hampshire, which votes Jan. 10, and in other early voting states.

It's this contest that helped propel Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore to their parties' nominations in 2000. It also helped Democrat John Kerry become Bush's challenger in 2004. And the caucuses gave Democrat Barack Obama his first win in 2008, though Mike Huckabee won on the Republican side, not the eventual GOP nominee, John McCain.

The caucus process seems arcane and mysterious, even to people in Iowa. That is in part because most people don't even participate. About 359,000 people ? 17 percent of registered voters in Iowa ? showed up for Democratic and Republican caucuses in 2008. Turnout will certainly be lower this year, since Obama is unopposed. And the GOP turnout may not exceed the record-setting 120,000 attendees that the party's contest saw four years ago.

Caucuses are held in all of the state's 1,774 voting precincts, some in remote spots where only a handful of voters gather, others in big community centers or schools that host several precincts under one roof. In all, Republicans will gather in about 800 locations.

This relatively small number of voters, and their overwhelmingly white makeup, routinely bring Iowa's caucuses under attack by outsiders who want more clout for their own states. Only 5 percent of Iowa's electorate is Hispanic and only 3 percent is black, compared with a national electorate that is 16 percent Hispanic and 12 percent black.

For their part, Iowans jealously guard their first-in-the-nation nominating contests.

While both parties in Iowa use the caucus system to choose candidates, Republicans and Democrats go about things differently.

For the GOP, the caucuses are simply a straw poll, meaning the results are not binding. While Democrats use the caucuses to choose delegates who are expected to support their favored candidate, Republicans handle that later at county and district conventions.

After electing a temporary chair to run the meeting and a secretary to record the proceedings, any Republican who chooses can briefly speak in favor of a candidate. Ballots are then passed out and participants mark their choices in private. Those ballots are quickly counted and the results called into party headquarters, where they are posted online as they are received.

Any Republican voter can participate, including those who register when they arrive at the event. People too young to vote can also take part if they will be 18 by the general election.

Democrats, when there are multiple candidates, take a more convoluted approach.

Democrats break into preference groups at their caucuses, publicly declaring which candidate they favor. Candidates must get support from 15 percent of those attending the caucus in order to receive votes. Once they break into those groups, activists try to attract those whose candidates have fallen short of the 15 percent threshold.

After the results are reported to party headquarters, the numbers are run through a formula that changes the value of votes based on a county-by-county analysis of Democratic performance in the last gubernatorial and presidential elections.

"The Republican caucuses and Democratic caucuses are two different beasts," said Democratic strategist Phil Roeder. "In the big picture, it makes for a very different result."

Democratic strategist Jerry Crawford put it another way: "Democrats always like to make things more difficult."

Although the Republicans have a simpler system, caucuses by both parties require more time and greater participation than in a primary election.

Activists said that level of commitment means that for a candidate to be successful, he or she must make connections with voters, then build an organization that can get them to their precinct gatherings.

"People still expect to see the candidates in person," said Steve Scheffler, who heads the influential Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition. "The candidates who have spent the most time here will benefit."

'Forrest Gump' to be preserved in US film registry (omg!)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Forrest Gump's oft-imitated line, "My momma always said, 'Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get' " will be immortalized among the nation's treasures in the world's largest archive of film, TV and sound recordings.

The Library of Congress on Wednesday announced that 1994's smash hit "Forrest Gump" starring Tom Hanks was one of 25 films chosen to be included this year in the National Film Registry.

The oldest reels are silent films both from 1912. "The Cry of the Children" is about the pre-World War I child labor reform movement and "A Cure for Pokeritis" features the industry's earliest comic superstar John Bunny.

Also from that silent era is Charlie Chaplin's first full-length feature, "The Kid," from 1921.

Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, each year the Librarian of Congress names 25 films that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant. This year, 2,228 films were nominated.

"These films are selected because of their enduring significance to American culture," Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said in a statement. "Our film heritage must be protected because these cinematic treasures document our history and culture and reflect our hopes and dreams."

For each title, the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation works to ensure that the film is preserved for future generations. That comes either by the Library's massive motion-picture preservation program or through collaborating with other archives, motion-picture studios and independent filmmakers.

The most recent film chosen is "Forrest Gump," which won six Academy Awards including for Best Picture.

Also starring in that movie about an everyman who ended up being part of the most iconic events of the 1960s and 1970s was Sally Field. Her perhaps most famous role playing "Norma Rae" in the movie of the same name from 1979 also made the list. She won an Academy Award for her portrayal of a poorly educated single mother who fought successfully to make her Southern textile mill a union shop.

Making the list is the animated Disney classic, "Bambi," made in 1942 about a deer's life in the forest, "The Big Heat" from 1953, a post-war noir film, and 1991's disturbing, "The Silence of the Lambs," which won Oscars for stars Jody Foster and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Hopkins plays cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in the psychological and violent thriller.

The original "War of the Worlds" from 1953 also will be preserved along with "Porgy and Bess," ''Stand and Deliver" and John Ford's epic Western, "The Iron Horse," from 1924.

Lesser known films were chosen for their significance to the art.

"A Computer Animated Hand" from 1972 is by Pixar Animation Studios co-founder Ed Catmull. The one-minute film that is one of the earliest examples of 3D computer animation displays the hand turning, opening and closing, pointing at the viewer and flexing its fingers.

Making the list were notable documentaries as well.

"Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment," focuses on Gov. George Wallace's attempt to prevent two African-American students from enrolling in the University of Alabama and the response of President John F. Kennedy. "Growing Up Female" from 1971 was one of the first films to come from the women's liberation movement.

Also included was "The Negro Soldier," produced by Frank Capra. It showed the heroism of blacks in the nation's wars and became mandatory viewing for all soldiers from spring 1944 until World War II's end.

Toshiba Thrive 7" review

As 2011 draws to a close, it's fun to look back and think about how we began the year testing the first Honeycomb tablet, and are now ending it elbow-deep in me-too slates, many of them cut down to smaller sizes. So it should surprise no one, then, that Toshiba released the Thrive 7", a mini (and aptly named) version of the original Thrive, which went on sale last summer.

But in Toshiba's case, shrinking a tablet and calling it a day is a dicey proposition. After all, the 10-inch Thrive had some baggage -- namely, middling battery life, a chunky, toy-like design and a bug that initially kept it from waking after recharging. Indeed, the Thrive 7" looks near-identical, and even packs the same Tegra 2 chip, 16GB of storage and vanilla take on Honeycomb. Still, it brings an LED flash, keeps its big brother's 1280 x 800 display and costs less than the original did when it first came out. So are these improvements enough to make this smaller Thrive stand out? And how does it stack up against all those other 7-inch slates we've been testing lately? Let's find out.

Ferguson won't be swayed by demands to spend

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:00 a.m. ET Dec. 25, 2011

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Despite the threat posed by Manchester City, Alex Ferguson insists he will resist calls for Manchester United to go on a spending spree in the January transfer window.

Going into Monday's Boxing Day matches, the defending champions are two points behind City, which has considerably outspent its neighbor in recent years and is now reaping the rewards as it sits at the top at Christmas for the first time since 1929.

Even though United has debts of around 460 million pounds ($718 million), Ferguson maintains that cash will be made available by the Glazer family, which owns the club.

"Contrary to what some people seem to be fixated about, money for a transfer is not a problem if I deem it necessary," Ferguson said.

The 69-year-old Scot delivered the message to fans in the matchday magazine for Monday's game against Wigan just weeks after United's surprise exit from the Champions League in the group stage.

"I am perfectly happy with the strength of our squad in terms of depth, quality and age range," Ferguson said. "I will not be swayed by the endless tweets and blogs urging the club to get busy in the transfer market next month. As far as I am concerned I am marching perfectly in step, true to my beliefs and principles.

"While recruiting some of the world's leading players can lift you into contention for honors, it doesn't necessarily take you all the way."

Winger Ashley Young this week joined an extensive injury list that includes center back Nemanja Vidic, midfielders Anderson and Tom Cleverley, and striker Michael Owen. Midfielder Darren Fletcher is also sidelined with a serious bowel disease with no date set for his return.

Any further injuries could yet persuade Ferguson to search for additions next month.

"Fortunes can fluctuate wildly - that's the football world," Ferguson said. "If a really top-class player became available, then we would go for him, or if we picked up any further serious injuries, it might be important to add to our squad."

City needs to shed players from its bloated squad - and payroll - in January to help the club comply with UEFA's new financial restrictions, so a repeat of the summer spending that included the 38 million pound (then $62 million) signing of Sergio Aguero is unlikely.

With 15 goals already this season, the Argentina striker has quickly established himself as City's most potent force.

"He is not tall but his strength is amazing," City manager Roberto Mancini said ahead of Monday's trip to West Bromwich Albion. "What is important at the moment is that he has improved our team."

Only Robin van Persie has scored more than Aguero in the Premier League this season, with the Arsenal striker on 16 goals compared to 13 for the City forward.

The Dutchman's goals have helped to haul Arsenal away from the relegation zone and back to within a point of the Champions League places.

Van Persie's goal in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Aston Villa saw him equal Thierry Henry's Arsenal record of 34 goals in a calendar year. The striker needs three goals in the remaining two games of 2011 to beat Alan Shearer's Premier League record of 36.

"He's an exceptional player, but what is very important for us is that over Christmas we win our games," manager Arsene Wenger said.

Arsenal hosts Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday and Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

With Arsenal just a point behind and Tottenham two points ahead, Chelsea will be looking to avoid a third consecutive draw on Monday when it hosts London neighbor Fulham, which was routed 5-0 by Manchester United on Wednesday.

"I'm not going to be thinking that because they lost to Man United it will be easy for us," Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge said. "Derbies are always difficult and they will want to bounce back against us."

Chelsea was held to a 1-1 draw on Thursday by Tottenham, which remains above its west London rival in third - its highest placing at Christmas since 1984 - ahead of Tuesday's match at Norwich.

Norwich is well clear of the relegation zone unlike the two other promoted sides - Swansea and QPR, who meet on Monday just four and two points clear from danger, respectively.

The bottom three is made up of teams from Lancashire. On Monday, bottom-place Blackburn is at Liverpool, 19th-place Bolton hosts Newcastle and Wigan is at Manchester United.

Also Monday, Everton goes to Sunderland and Stoke takes on Aston Villa.

Etta James Using Breathing Machine in California Hospital

Johnny Nunez, WireImage

Legendary singer Etta James currently sits in a Los Angeles hospital, using a breathing machine to keep her conscious.

The 73-year-old 'At Last' songstress, who made headlines Dec. 16 when news broke that her leukemia diagnosis was incurable, was taken to a care center near her home in Riverside, Calif., last week according to her manager, Lupe De-Leon. James had been struggling to breathe, according to Reuters.

"They took her to the hospital," De-Leo revealed. "She was having trouble breathing, so they intubated her. She is on a breathing machine and is resting."

Besides her leukemia battle, the embattled entertainer had a past heroine addiction she recovered from and also suffers from kidney disease and dementia.

James' song, Donto James, said that a Christmas celebration was being held in her hospital room since she was not physically able to spend the holidays at home.

Donto James is currently involved in a legal dispute with Etta James' husband, Artis Mills, over control and care of the sick singer's $1 million estate. As it stands now, Mills is a conservator of James' estate. He requested $500,000 for James' medical costs, however, a Riverside County superior judge only released $350,000 to him on Monday (Dec. 19).

Update:Leafs Coach Ron Wilson Gets Contract Extension

12/25/2011

Ron Wilson must have been good this year.

The Toronto Maple Leafs coach playfully tweeted two days ago that he wanted a new contract and it seems the team has obliged.

Wilson posted on his official Twitter feed today that the Leafs have given him an extension saying

' "He came! He came!" Remember saying that as a little kid? Well he did: I got a new Red Ryder BB gun and a contract extension!'

The 56-year-old tweeted Friday that his Christmas wish was for a new contract from Leafs general manager Brian Burke.

Wilson is in the final season of a four-year contract and currently has the Leafs sixth in the Eastern Conference with 40
points.

Toronto has not made the playoffs in three prior seasons under Wilson.

Leafs GM Brian Burke responded later in the day "Congratulations to Ron Wilson on his contract extension! Merry Christmas Ron!"

Penn engineers develop more effective MRI contrast agent for cancer detection

Abstract:
Many imaging technologies and their contrast agents ? chemicals used during scans to help detect tumors and other problems ? involve exposure to radiation or heavy metals, which present potential health risks to patients and limit the ways they can be applied. In an effort to mitigate these drawbacks, new research from University of Pennsylvania engineers shows a way to coat an iron-based contrast agent so that it only interacts with the acidic environment of tumors, making it safer, cheaper and more effective than existing alternatives.

The research was conducted by associate professor Andrew Tsourkas and graduate student Samuel H. Crayton of the department of bioengineering in Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science. It was published in the journal ACS Nano.

Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, is an increasingly common feature of medical care. Using a strong magnetic field to detect and influence the alignment of water molecules in the body, MRI can quickly produce pictures of wide range of bodily tissues, though the clarity of these pictures is sometimes insufficient for diagnoses. To improve the differentiation ? or contrast ? between tumors and healthy tissue, doctors can apply a contrast agent, such as nanoparticles containing iron oxide. The iron oxide can improve MRI images due to their ability to distort the magnetic field of the scanner; areas they are concentrated in stand out more clearly.

These nanoparticles, which have recently been approved in the United States for clinical use as contrast agents, are literally sugar-coated; an outer layer of dextran keeps the particles from binding or being absorbed by the body and potentially sickening the patient. This non-reactive coating allows the iron oxide to be flushed out after the imaging is complete, but it also means that the particles can't be targeted to a particular kind of tissue.

If the contrast agent could be engineered so it only sticks to tissue that is already diseased, such as tumors, it would solve both problems at once. Scientists have tried this approach by coating nanoparticles with proteins that bind only to receptors found on the exterior of tumors, but not all tumors are the same in this regard.

"One of the limitations of a receptor-based approach is that you just don't hit everything," Tsourkas said. "It's hard to recommend them as a screening tool when you know that the target receptors are only expressed in 30% of tumors."

"One of the reasons we like our approach is that it hits a lot of tumors; almost all tumors exhibit a change in the acidity of their microenvironment."

The Penn engineers took advantage of something known as the Warburg effect, a quirk of tumor metabolism, to get around the targeting problem. Most of the body's cells are aerobic; they primarily get their energy from oxygen. However, even when oxygen is plentiful, cancerous cells use an anaerobic process for their energy. Like overtaxed muscles, they turn glucose into lactic acid, but unlike normal muscles, tumors disrupt the blood flow around them and have a hard time clearing this acid away. This means that tumors almost always have a lower pH than surrounding healthy tissue.

Some imaging technologies, such as magnetic resonance spectroscopy, can also take advantage of tumors' low-pH microenvironments, but they require expensive specialized equipment that is not available in most clinical settings.

By using glycol chitosan ? a sugar-based polymer that reacts to acids ? the engineers allowed the nanocarriers to remain neutral when near healthy tissue, but to become ionized in low pH. The change in charge that occurs in the vicinity of acidic tumors causes the nanocarriers to be attracted to and retained at those sites.

This approach has another benefit: the more malignant a tumor is, the more it disrupts surrounding blood vessels and the more acidic its environment becomes. This means that the glycol chitosan-coated is a good detector of malignancy, opening up treatment options above and beyond diagnosis.

"You can take any nanoparticle and put this coating on it, so it's not limited to imaging by any means," said Tsourkas. "You could also use it to deliver drugs to tumor sites."

The researchers hope that, within seven to 10 years, glycol-chitosan-coated iron oxide nanoparticles could improve the specificity of diagnostic screening. The ability to accurately detect sites of malignancy by MRI would be an immediate improvement to existing contrast agents for certain breast cancer scans.

"Gadolinium is used as a contrast agent in MRI breast cancer screenings for high-risk patients. These patients are recommended to get an MRI in addition to the usual mammogram, because the sensitivity of mammograms can be poor," said Tsourkas. "The sensitivity of an MRI is much higher, but the specificity is low: the screening detects a lot of tumors, but many of them are benign. Having a tool like ours would allow clinicians to better differentiate the benign and malignant tumors, especially since there has been shown to be a correlation between malignancy and pH."

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program.

Oil price near $100 on global security concerns (AP)

NEW YORK ? Oil prices rose above $100 a barrel Friday as worries over global security issues outweighed weak economic data in the U.S.

Benchmark crude ended the day at $99.68 per barrel in New York, up 15 cents. It rose as high as $100.23 during the session. Brent crude finished 7 cents higher at $107.96 a barrel in London.

Tensions between Iran and western nations, along with unrest in Syria, Bahrain, Kazakhstan and Iraq have raised worries that oil supplies could be disrupted if the unrest spreads or grows more serious.

While none of those situations has disrupted oil supplies yet, traders say it is too dangerous to sell oil or bet that oil prices will fall with tensions so high near so many important oil-producing regions. Even small disruptions in oil supplies can send prices dramatically higher.

Among the biggest concerns is Iran, the world's fourth biggest producer of crude. The U.S. and Europe may tighten sanctions against Iran over the West's fear that Iran is trying to build a nuclear bomb. Also, Iraq is expected to become the fastest growing producer in the Middle East in the next several years as it recovers from war and tries to tap its enormous reserves of oil. But a surge in violence there since the U.S. withdrew troops is raising concerns that Iraq won't be able to increase production as fast as hoped.

"Iran might not passively wait for sanctions to be applied and could act unilaterally to embargo supplies," J.P Morgan said in a report. "We are also concerned about Iraq, where political uncertainties seem to be rising following the U.S. troop pullout."

Traders also say they expect European financial authorities to increase the flow of money in the regional economy to try to slow or stop the region's slide into recession. Investors tend to buy commodities such as oil when more money becomes available, raising their prices.

Economic data in the U.S. has been mostly positive this week, which helped propel oil to four straight days of gains. Demand for oil and gas grows with the economy as shippers move more goods and consumers drive and fly more.

Jobless claims fell and housing construction increased. But the Commerce Department reported on Friday that consumer spending and incomes were growing at a very weak pace, suggesting continued sluggish economic growth.

Trading volume is normally low during the last week of the year, as many traders vacation around the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays. Global oil markets are closed Monday for Christmas.

Average retail gasoline prices rose less than a penny Friday to a national average of $3.22 per gallon.

In other energy trading, natural gas fell 6 cents to end at $3.114 per 1,000 cubic feet. Heating oil lost about 2 cents to finish at $2.8907 a gallon, and gasoline futures ended up 5 cents at $2.6872 a gallon.

Fairfax merges Vic community papers arm

Fairfax Media has moved to recapture some recently lost real estate advertising revenue in Victoria through a merger with Metro Media Publishing (MMP).

MMP was founded by Antony Catalano and publishes The Weekly Review, which successfully took large real estate advertising dollars away from Fairfax's Melbourne Weekly when it launched in 2010.

Industry estimates suggest The Weekly Review took about $20 million in advertising revenue away from Fairfax.

Under the deal, which still requires Australian Competition and Consumer Commission approval, Fairfax would pay $35 million and fold its Fairfax Community Newspapers in Victoria into MMP.

Fairfax said it would own 50 per cent voting and economic interest in MMP after the transaction was completed.

Fairfax's statement on Friday said The Weekly Review was delivered to about 220,000 households.

MMP managing director Antony Catalano, a former senior executive at Fairfax's The Age newspaper in Melbourne, would continue in his current role, Fairfax said.

"This merger provides the opportunity to roll out Fairfax Media's Domain brand across the MMP titles, and to build a stronger internet and app presence for the local real estate industry," he said in a statement.

"Both MMP and Fairfax Media see a bright future for high-quality local print publications working closely with real estate agents, and an improved digital presence will only enhance this offering."

At 1214 AEDT Fairfax was up one cent, or 1.41 per cent, at 72 cents.

Will Tebow host 'Saturday Night Live'?

Taran Killam played Tim Tebow on "SNL," but the show reportedly would like the real quarterback to host.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Tim Tebow was featured last week in a "Saturday Night Live" skit, but could the real Denver Broncos quarterback be coming to the show?

It's just a rumor, but Bonnie Fuller's Hollywood Life.com is reporting that a source says "SNL" would love to book Tebow to host once the football season ends.

The article doesn't say the NBC show has contacted Tebow, 24, just that?producers "(realize) it would be HUGE ratings and they are hoping he will say yes."

Yes, people would tune in -- we'd be among them. Athletes, including quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, have hosted the show, so there is precedent. But if he's approached, Tebow's going to say no, and he's smart to do so.

First off, whatever his athletic skills, he's not going to be comfortable standing up there delivering the traditional opening monologue.

The skits themselves are a whole different thing. Manning actually took part in a memorable sketch where he played off his nice guy image, terrorizing a bunch of?grade-school football players. (At one point, Manning?clonks a kid in the head with a pass and then yells at him:?"Get your head outta your a**! You SUCK!" He later shows them how to break into a car.)

But how could Tebow do the same? He's known for prayers, praising God on-field and off, and going on missionary trips where he has assisted in medical and dental procedures, including, most famously, helping in circumcisions.

There's no question the sketches "SNL's" writers would create for Tebow would play off the many known issues surrounding him -- the circumcisions, his virginity, the on-field prayer stance dubbed "Tebowing." But once they handed those scripts to Tebow, it seems wildly unlikely that he'd go along with what they come up with. Who can blame him?

Manning did it, and he looked smart for doing so. But here's betting the Tebow sketches would be much more personal and vicious, and much more likely to go against Tebow's personal values, religious or otherwise.

Last week's show featured Taran Killam playing Tebow, who is visited in the locker room by Jesus Christ (Jason Sudeikis). After it aired, evangelist Pat Robertson said the sketch showed "anti-Christian bigotry."

Whatever Robertson's opinion, we're betting that if "SNL" wants more Tebow on the show, they're going to have to keep utilizing Killam, not the real guy.

Warrant issued for famed sports agent Steinberg over debt

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- "Show me the money" indeed: A bench warrant has been authorized for the sports agent who was the inspiration for the movie Jerry Maguire after he failed to appear in court in a case involving a $1.4 million debt.

An Orange County Superior Court commissioner authorized the warrant after Leigh Steinberg failed to attend court last week, court records show.

Court papers show Steinberg was ordered to pay $1.4 million last year to the Irvine Company in a default judgment for office space he leased in Newport Beach. Steinberg stopped paying under the terms of his lease in 2009, according to court papers filed by the landlord, which declined to comment on the case.

Steinberg was the inspiration for Tom Cruise's character in 1996's Jerry Maguire, which turned "Show me the money!" into an enduring catchphrase, though Steinberg isn't actually known for using that phrase.

Steinberg said he's not hiding or running from the law. He said he has an office open for business in Irvine and thousands of friends on Facebook and followers on Twitter.

The 62-year-old agent said he's still representing athletes and acting as a consultant on projects related to sports in movies, television and video games.

Steinberg said he had asked his attorney to change the date of his Dec. 15 hearing and was told it was taken care of. Steinberg said he was unaware of any warrant in the case, which stems from some payments he missed in 2009 before moving to less expensive office space.

"Since when in this country do you put people in jail for having debt?" he said in a phone interview Thursday. "The point is, I had some financial struggles, which I regret. And I am working hard right now to pay the debts I owe."

The warrant was authorized by Superior Court Commissioner Jane D. Myers. The court would need to receive instructions and fees from the plaintiff, the Irvine Company, for the warrant to become effective.

Steinberg said his financial troubles stem in part from his divorce in 2008. He separated from his wife in 2006.

During the divorce proceedings, Steinberg told the court he had suffered "significant business reversals and losses" that had prompted the couple to refinance the family home, according to papers filed in family court in Orange County.

Since that time, Steinberg has also been sued over allegedly unpaid bills owed to a bank, credit card company, apartment complex and dentist, court records show.

Those amounts were far smaller than the Irvine Company case, including a $6,754 bill from a dentist, the records show.

Earlier this month, the Irvine Company asked the court to require Steinberg to apply a portion of his income stream to pay the judgment, alleging process servers have been unable to directly contact him.

"Steinberg is a semi famous figure with huge apparent notoriety but shows signs of significant recent deterioration," Brooke Brandt, an attorney for the Orange County real estate company, wrote in a Dec. 9 court filing. "He appears to have a phalanx of security protection around him that prevents process servers from gaining access to him unless he allows it."

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Feb. 6.

Steinberg is considered the first super agent in sports, having represented such NFL stars as Troy Aikman, Steve Young, Warren Moon and Ben Roethlisberger, as well as boxer Oscar De La Hoya. His r?sum? includes representing eight No. 1 overall NFL draft picks. He began his career in 1975 and was able to secure huge signing bonuses for some of football's biggest stars.

Pierce, Temple run over Wyoming 37-15 in NM Bowl (AP)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? Bernard Pierce ran for two early touchdowns and Chris Coyer threw for 169 yards and a touchdown to help Temple beat Wyoming 37-15 in the New Mexico Bowl on Saturday.

The Owls (9-4) had three interceptions ? tying a New Mexico Bowl record ? en route to the second bowl victory in school history.

The New Mexico Bowl was Temple's second bowl game in three years, but that 2009 game ? a 30-21 loss to UCLA in the EagleBank Bowl in Washington ? was the Owls' first bowl in 30 years. The Mid-American Conference East runner-up did not get a bowl invite last year despite going 8-4.

"Our team played real well. We played a team game," first-year Temple coach Steve Addazio said. "Our starting point is playing great defense. That's the starting point of our program. We have a lot of pride in playing great defense."

Sophomore Coyer, who also rushed for 71 yards, was selected the game's offensive MVP.

Coyer said Temple got a little worried at the end of the first half when Wyoming freshman Brett Smith threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Josh Doctson with 28 seconds left. But Coyer responded with a 61-yard touchdown pass to Rod Streater moments later.

"We knew they had swung the momentum their way. It was a big touchdown for them," Coyer said. "We weren't really sure if we were going to go for it or sit on it."

Meanwhile, Smith was held to just 127 yards by a greedy Owls defensive line that preventing the Cowboys from getting anything started.

The loss dropped the Cowboys (8-5) to 6-7 in bowl games. It was a disappointed effort by Wyoming after the Cowboys won the 2009 New Mexico Bowl in double overtime, beating Fresno State 35-28.

"It was disappointing," Cowboys coach Dave Christensen said. "We knew they were going to run the football, which they did."

Business Matters: SOPA Delayed, Not Dead, After House Judiciary ...

December 16, 2011

SOPA: Not Dead Yet
-- A House Judiciary Committee ended two days of markup on the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) on Friday with plans to reconvene on Wednesday. Most of the amendments introduced to the committee were voted down, but the bill's opponents scored a win when Chairman Lamar Smith agreed that a report on the bill's impact on cybersecurity would be a good idea. ?

SOPA, the House's anti-piracy bill aimed at foreign rogue websites - the counterpart to the Senate's PROTECT IP bill - was in its markup phase this week. In the markup phase legislators vote to accept or reject changes to a bill. One part of how sausage is made in Washington D.C. involves the lobbying before a bill is introduced and influencing the actual wording of the bill. Anyone who caught the hearing's webcast probably realized the markup phase is important yet often dry and mundane.? ?

The fervor around the sessions has been anything but mundane, however. Lobbying, publicity campaigns and personal advocacy have been in overdrive this week. Twitter has been alive with tweets advocating opposition to the bill. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is reportedly considering taking down the site as a stunt, basically a preemptive fight against a remote chance of actual censorship through an actual act of self-censorship.

Readers unsure about the gravity of this bill need look no further than the rhetoric on display. Google co-founder Sergey Brin likened SOPA to state-sponsored Internet censorship in China and Iran. The Progressive Change Campaign Committee, a left-leaning political action committee, has argued that "big corporations" are pursuing a bill that dissuade entrepreneurs from creating the next Reddit, YouTube, Google or Bit.ly. Of course, the PCCC is referring to big content companies in the entertainment business, not big, multi-billion-dollar corporations involved in technology-related IP.

The PCCC claimed victory on Friday after the committee adjourned. "The Internet fought back to protect the Internet -- and we won, for now," it wrote at its website. "We have to assemble our Internet army for next year, when this bill will come up again." The Guardian also declared victory for the tech community. But, as The Guardian noted, and, to borrow a phrase from Monty Python, SOPA isn't dead yet.

Why Apple iOS Still Has A Greater Share of New Dev. Projects: $$$

-- By all accounts, Google's Android mobile operating system dominates new mobile device purchases. But Flurry, a provider of analytics for app developers, found that Apple iOS has maintained its share of developers' new projects starts in the last four quarters of 2011 (the last quarter is just an estimate since the month is not yet over). In the first quarter of 2011, iOS commanded 63 percent of new project starts to Android's 37 percent. But iOS's share increased to 73 percent, 75 percent and 73 percent in the following quarters.

What's driving developer interest in iOS even as Android takes a commanding share of new mobile phone purchases? "Of particular note, Apple expanded distribution for iOS devices beyond its long-standing exclusive with AT&T to include Verizon in February and Sprint in October," Flurry explains. "Further, the highly successful launches of iPad 2 in February and iPhone 4S in October resulted in increased developer support for Apple.? By contrast, Android does not enjoy a truly recognizable flagship device among its army of OEMs supporting the platform."

But the bottom line could simply be, to no surprise, money. "Anecdotally," Flurry continues, "developers consistently tell us that they make more money on iOS, about three to four times as much."

Japan says stricken nuclear power plant in cold shutdown (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japan declared its tsunami-stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant to be in cold shutdown on Friday, taking a major step to resolving the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years but some critics questioned whether the plant was really under control.

The Fukushima Daiichi plant, 240 km (150 miles) northeast of Tokyo, was wrecked on March 11 by a huge earthquake and a towering tsunami which knocked out its cooling systems, triggering meltdowns, radiation leaks and mass evacuations.

In making the much-anticipated announcement, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda tried to draw a line under the most acute phase of the crisis and highlighted the next challenges: the clean-up and the safe dismantling of the plant, something the government says may take more than 30 years.

"The reactors have reached a state of cold shutdown," Noda told a government nuclear emergency response meeting.

"A stable condition has been achieved," he added, noting radiation levels at the boundary of the plant could now be kept at low levels, even in the event of "unforeseeable incidents."

A cold shutdown is when water used to cool nuclear fuel rods remains below boiling point, preventing the fuel from reheating. One of the chief aims of the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), had been to bring the reactors to that state by the year-end.

The declaration of a cold shutdown could have repercussions well beyond the plant. It is a government pre-condition for allowing about 80,000 residents evacuated from within a 20 km (12 mile) radius of the plant to go home.

Both Noda and his environment and nuclear crisis minister Goshi Hosono said that while the government still faced huge challenges, the situation at the plant was under control.

That provoked an angry response from senior local officials, Greenpeace and some reporters even as the Vienna-based U.N. nuclear agency welcomed "significant progress" at the plant.

"We hope that this will be a fresh step towards going back home but it does not change the fact that the path to bringing the crisis under control is long and tough," Fukushima governor Yuhei Sato said, according to the Asahi newspaper website.

Greenpeace dismissed the announcement as a publicity stunt.

"By triumphantly declaring a cold shutdown, the Japanese authorities are clearly anxious to give the impression that the crisis has come to an end, which is clearly not the case," Greenpeace Japan said in a statement.

Hosono acknowledged that there were some areas where it would be difficult to bring people back and said there could be small difficulties here and there, but he told a briefing: "I believe there will be absolutely no situation in which problems escalate and nearby residents are forced to evacuate."

The water temperature in all three of the affected reactors fell below boiling point by September, but Tepco had said it would declare a state of cold shutdown only once it was satisfied that the temperatures and the amount of radiation emitted from the plant remained stable.

Jonathan Cobb, an expert at the British-based World Nuclear Association, said the authorities had been conservative in choosing the timing of the announcement.

"The government has delayed declaration of cold shutdown conditions, one reason being to ensure that the situation at the plant was stable," Cobb said, adding that the evacuation zone should get progressively smaller as more of it was decontaminated.

Kazuhiko Kudo, professor of nuclear engineering at Kyushu University, said authorities needed to determine exactly the status of melted fuel inside the reactors and stabilize a makeshift cooling system, which handles the tens of thousands of tons of contaminated water accumulated on-site.

HUGE COSTS, ANXIETY

The government and Tepco will aim to begin removing the undamaged nuclear rods from the plant's spent fuel pools next year. However, retrieval of fuel that melted down in their reactors may not begin for another decade.

The enormous cost of the cleanup and compensating the victims has drained Tepco financially. The government may inject about $13 billion into the company as early as next summer in a de facto nationalization, sources told Reuters last week.

An official advisory panel estimates Tepco may have to pay about 4.5 trillion yen ($57 billion) in compensation in the first two years after the nuclear crisis, and that it will cost 1.15 trillion yen to decommission the plant, though some experts put it at 4 trillion yen ($51 billion) or even more.

Japan also faces a massive cleanup task outside the east coast plant if residents are to be allowed to go home. The Environment Ministry says about 2,400 square km (930 square miles) of land around the plant may need to be decontaminated, an area roughly the size of Luxembourg.

The crisis shook the public's faith in nuclear energy and Japan is now reviewing an earlier plan to raise the proportion of electricity generated from nuclear power to 50 percent by 2030 from 30 percent in 2010.

Japan may not immediately walk away from nuclear power, but few doubt that nuclear power will play a lesser role in future.

Living in fear of radiation is part of life for residents both near and far from the plant. Cases of excessive radiation in vegetables, tea, milk, seafood and water have stoked anxiety despite assurances from public officials that the levels detected are not dangerous.

Chernobyl's experience shows that anxiety is likely to persist for years, with residents living near the former Soviet plant still regularly checking produce for radiation before consuming it 25 years after the disaster.
