Finding the right Kind of Concrete Sealer to shield Your Wall ...

Concrete is a stable construction component, but still vulnerable to degeneration. The use of concrete sealers will let you preserve your property and protect it from decay.

Many people have used concrete to make large structures from the time of ancient Romans. Even with its toughness, concrete is still susceptible to corrosion and deterioration. Ask your Calgary concrete company to apply a concrete sealer if you would like protect your property.

Based on studies carried out by the National Ready Mix Concrete Association, Portland Cement Association, and the American Concrete Institute, almost all destruction of concrete relates to moisture absorption. Sealers either clog up the concrete?s tiny holes to help reduce the absorption of water as well as other substances, or form an outer layer that helps prevent these substances from getting through. Below are a few kinds of sealers your Calgary concrete provider may apply to your building.

Wax Sealers

Wax sealers are non permanent alternatives for many who cannot afford to cover their building with more high priced sealers yet. These sealers are inexpensive, but last only about nine to twelve months.

Capillary or Silicate Sealer

This kind of sealer is the most widely used, especially for cellar walls. It binds with concrete below the surface area after use, filling the concrete?s pores and stopping moisture infiltration. In addition, it boosts the concrete?s capacity to resist heavy weight and pressure by up to 40%. It dries clear and might be painted over, so you don?t need to worry about it spoiling your building. Just one use of capillary sealer will last a very long time.

Polyester Sealers

These types of rapid-drying sealers function just like capillary sealers, infiltrating the deeper layers of concrete to fill its pores to stop moisture absorption. They don?t completely cease the infiltration of vapour and gas, however, and need recoating every year.

Latex-based Paint

Latex-based paint can be used as a concrete sealer, but is almost exclusively utilized for cellar wall surfaces. While it does keep moisture away to some extent, it?s susceptible to peeling or cracking. This sealer needs recoating every year, or more often based on how much moisture and vapour the paint is in contact with.

Silane/Siloxane Sealers

This clear, water-based sealer is commonly used for concrete and dense masonry surfaces like stucco and stone. The principal trouble with this type of sealer is it wears off and discolours very easily when subjected to excessive ultraviolet (UV) light and it can?t be repainted. In addition, it calls for annual reapplication.

Acrylic Sealers

This kind of sealer is perfect for exterior surfaces consistently subjected to natural light because it?s protected from UV damage. It looks glossy when it dries, which makes it perfect for beautifying colorful or decorative walls. The toxicity levels of acrylic sealers lead to some concern among property and building owners, however, many Calgary concrete providers offer you water-based acrylic sealers, which are a lot less toxic than regular solvent-based ones.

Selecting the right sort of concrete sealer for your building or house is critical if you?d like to make it tougher while still maintaining its aesthetic appeal. Check with your designer or contractor to find out what sort of sealer you must apply to your wall surfaces.

7 Deadly Sins of Online Marketing for Small Business

Online marketing has become an important part of the small business toolbox. In order to reach consumers and grow your business, there are a variety of tactics and tools you can use ? from online advertising to social media marketing to reputation management and more. Managing all the ins and outs of running a small business is complex, and juggling all the different aspects of online marketing is a responsibility in and of itself.

business devil

So, take a minute to make sure you?re not committing any of these seven deadly sins when marketing your small business:

1.)?Not Tracking Your Online Advertising?

One of the incredible benefits of online advertising is the ability to track it. If you?re advertising your small business online, it?s important to track not just the clicks you?re getting to your website or landing page, but also what happens after the click. Are customers calling your business, filling out a form, or leaving your page after they click? If you don?t know, how will you know if your advertising is actually working to help your business get more customers? Many sophisticated online marketing products will allow you to track all this and more, so you can not only learn the effectiveness of your campaigns, but also optimize them around what?s working as well. So, start tracking your online advertising to make sure you?re getting the most out of your investment.

2.)?Not Locally Targeting Your Online Marketing

As a small business, there?s a good chance a large majority of your client base is made up of local consumers. If so and you?re investing in online marketing and not targeting it locally, it could cost you. Not only will you pay more to target national keywords and spend more to compete on these terms, but you may also be missing consumers who are searching for a local business just like yours.

By locally targeting your online marketing, you can get a better return on your investment and more effectively reach consumers who are looking for local businesses. Even if you want to invest some of your online marketingon broader efforts, it?s critical to make sure to include localization as well. And, by tracking the success of each strategy, you can find out what works best to help you get more customers and shift more of your investment there.

3.)?Not Claiming Your Google Place Page

You may already be investing in SEO to help your website rank well in organic search. A Google Place Page is another valuable tool that can help your small business show up in desktop and mobile search to local consumers searching for a business like yours ? and it?s free to use.

If you haven?t claimed your Google Place Page, make sure to do so immediately. By claiming and optimizing your page, you not only gain more control over what?s listed about your business, you can also gain valuable shelf space on Google for important business keywords in organic search.

4.)?Failing to Optimize Your Landing Page for Conversions

Most forms of online marketing include a goal of getting people to visit your website or a specific landing page on it. But if it?s not optimized for conversions, you may be losing a lot of potential customers despite all of your efforts to get people to that page.

Is your contact information prominently displayed and easy to locate at the top of your page? Do you have a clear call to action directing visitors to perform a specific action ? like calling your business or filling out a form? Is the most important information clearly visible above the fold, or do visitors have to scroll down to find what they really need? Contact your web developer to talk about changes you could implement to make your website more effective at converting customers, which will boost the effectiveness of your online marketing.

5.)?Not Training Staff on Lead Handling

Many small businesses spend so much time and effort focusing on the front end of the marketing funnel that they neglect one of the most important components of the marketing process. What happens to a lead once they express interest in your business? For most small businesses, one of the most costly aspects of the marketing equation is how your staff handle the leads that come to you ? whether by phone, email, fax, or in person. You?re investing a lot in generating leads, and every lead counts! That?s why training all your staff on how to properly answer the phone, respond to a customer request, and handle leads is so critical.

6.) Poor Customer Service

Did you know that the service your customers receive at your small business is a critical component of your online marketing? That?s because word of mouth is still one of the most powerful influencers on consumers. And in today?s digital world, what your customers say online about how your business treats them is a part of your business Web presence, whether you like it or not.

If you?re guilty of bad customer service, chances are that this news will spread fast online.?The good news is, word about great customer experiences spreads as well. That?s why it?s important to make sure your team is well versed on how to provide world-class customer service.

That?s why it?s important to make sure your team is well versed on how to provide world-class customer service.

7.)?Letting Your Online Reputation Go Unchecked

What exactly are people saying about your small business online? Letting your online reputation go unchecked can be a huge mistake ? especially if there are unaddressed negative reviews about your business that are ranking well in search engines or gaining a lot of attention on review sites. A negative online reputation can cost you customers.

So, instead of wondering what people are saying about your business online, make sure to conduct a regular online reputation analysis so you can discover the negative and address it while focusing regular efforts on asking happy customers to share reviews about your business to build the positive buzz about your business.

Are you guilty of committing any of these deadly sins of small business online marketing? Do you have any to add to this list? Share your thoughts in a comment!

Samsung's Music Hub launches in UK, France and Germany, offers 100GB storage, unlimited streaming

Samsung's Music Hub launches in UK, France and Germany, offers 100GB cloud and unlimited streaming of 19 million tracks for a price

We already knew Samsung was dipping a toe in the music market, and now it's officially landed. Music Hub will launch with the GSIII in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. It's fair to say the electronics giant will be trampling on a fair number of toes, with Music Hub offering both streaming -- from 7 Digital's catalog of 19 million -- as well as recommendations, and a 100GB iTunes Match-esque cloud service. You'll need to trump up £ / €9.99 (about $16) if you want the premium features (unlimited streaming from the catalog and the online storage of your library,) while the free option will let you listen to matched / purchased tracks anywhere (from your phone or the web interface). Samsung's clearly taking a holistic approach with Music Hub, and it'll be a standard feature on its phones going forward (plus potentially Smart TVs and even Fridges). It might not just be restricted to its own hardware eco-system either, with some talk of it coming to other mobile devices in the future, officially, this time.

Microsoft posts Windows 8 app porting guide roundup, forgets to include BASIC

Let's say you're a developer eager to convert your apps for Windows 8 as soon as possible. Where do you start? Microsoft Developer Evangelist Jennifer Marsman is very much aware that you might be at a loss, so she has done the rather large favor of rounding up every porting guide the company has to offer in one handy place. Some of these are pure design guides, like a previously spotted iPad-to-Metro layout article, but others dig deep into converting code for the land of home tiles and charms. The focus is on porting from the web and Windows Phone 7, so we wouldn't work up hopes of bringing your high school computer class project to Metro. Still, Marsman is looking for more guides from readers; if you've developed just the technique to convert 10 PRINT "HELLO WORLD" 20 GOTO 10 into a tablet-native Windows 8 app, return the generosity and leave pointers at the source link.

Texas gunman died in Indiana standoff

VALPARAISO, Indiana ? A coroner reportedly said Saturday that a 48-year-old Texas man allegedly took hostages in a northwestern Indiana realty office and held police at bay for several hours before shooting himself twice in the head.

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said Roy L. Ferguson, of Fulshear, Texas, suffered three gunshot wounds before dying, likely from two different weapons, on Friday.

The coroner said Ferguson died at 6:30 p.m., two hours after the end of the nearly seven-hour standoff at Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office in Valparaiso, about 40 miles southeast of Chicago.

?The likelihood of all three gunshot wounds coming from the same weapon is not good,? Harris said.

He said that wouldn?t be confirmed until an autopsy is performed. It had not yet been scheduled because of Memorial Day weekend.

Valparaiso Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Grennes said Saturday that Ferguson had only one firearm ? a handgun. Grennes also said the SWAT officers who rushed inside the office after hearing gunshots at 4:30 p.m. did not fire on Ferguson, but officers exchanged gunfire with Ferguson when the standoff started.

Asked Saturday if police had shot Ferguson, Grennes said, ?It?s under investigation.?

The Times of Munster posted a video report on its website showing police officers crawling through a window of a Valparaiso house owned and rented out by Ferguson to execute a search warrant. The newspaper said Ferguson moved to Texas about four years ago after his wife died.

Meanwhile, police received a 911 call around 10 a.m. Friday reporting a man with a gun had entered the brokerage office, Grennes said. There were fewer than 10 people in the building when the incident began, he said.

One of them was accountant Carolyn Biesen. She was in her office when she heard a commotion near the front desk. Biesen walked out, saw a man standing over her injured co-worker on the ground and yelled at him to leave.

?That?s when he pulled his gun out ? and pointed it in the air,? she told The Associated Press late Friday, several hours after she and several other people were taken hostage.

Biesen, 51, retreated back into her office, locked herself in, shoved a file cabinet in front of the door and called 911. Curled up under her desk, she heard two gunshots, then several more in rapid succession.

Police said later that Ferguson was looking for someone he believed owed him money when he went into the Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office in Valparaiso on Friday morning.

Valparaiso Police Chief Michael Brickner said officers believe Ferguson shot himself twice in the head before SWAT members broke windows and stormed inside less than two hours after the last two hostages had been released unharmed.

An ambulance rushed Ferguson to a hospital, where he died, police said. No hostages reported being shot, though Grennes said one person who was struck in the head was treated and released from a hospital.

Mack Elliott, an agent at the brokerage, wasn?t in the office Friday but said he spoke with agents who were present. He believes the incident stemmed from a dispute over a real estate transaction.

The Samsung Galaxy S3-A Superior Handset To The Lumia 900 For Storage And Screen Technology

We put two premium smartphones head to head to see which one comes out on top for display performance and storage capacity. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Nokia Lumia 900 are regarded as the leading devices on their respective operating systems which are Android and Windows. Which model will come out on top in this comparison?

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the latest device to be launched by the company and it is the successor to the Galaxy S2, a device that became a global sensation in 2011 by shifting over 30 million units. This new handset features a 4.8 inch screen which is larger than the 4.3 inch display used by the S2. Samsung have increased the resolution of this display to 1280 x 720 pixels which results in a truly superb pixel density of 306PPI. Samsung have also opted to use a new type of AMOLED technology on this model named Pen Tile. This type of screen features fewer blue pixels which degrade faster than the other colours resulting in reduced image clarity. Therefore you can expect the screen on this phone to deliver optimum performance even when the phone itself is starting to age. The Nokia Lumia 900 makes use of a high quality 4.3 inch screen which is also of the AMOLED variety. This handset delivers superb viewing angles and excellent dark tones thanks to the incorporation of Nokia?s Clearblack technology. Resolution wise the model can display 480 x 800 pixels which means that just 217 pixels can be displayed per inch. The Samsung device holds the upper hand over its rival in this department thanks to excellent resolution and the new form of AMOLED.

The new Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in 3 different versions, each offering a different storage capacity. For multi media fans the premium 64GB variety should offer ample storage for entire music and movie collections. If you do not require this amount of storage but still want a larger than average capacity then the 32GB model may prove a wise choice. For more basic phone users the 16GB model still offers a level similar to many other flagship devices. All three versions benefit from a micro SD card slot which means capacity can be expanded by up to 32GB. The Lumia 900 is much more basic in terms of storage options. Just one version of the phone is available which is 16GB and no micro SD card slot is featured just like all other Windows handsets. The 512MB of RAM memory is good but still half of the 1GB that is boasted by the S3.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Nokia Lumia 900 are both super devices but the Samsung definately outclasses its rival in this comparison. The screen used is one of the very best on the market and the various storage options gives users the opportunity to choose a device that suits their needs.

It probably didn't help Ross Detwiler's cause, after he'd struggled against Atlanta last night, giving up five hits, four walks and three runs, all earned in 4.1 innings over which he threw 100 pitches, that Chien-Ming Wang came on and threw 3.0 strong innings in which he allowed a double to the first batter he faced, a single by the opposing pitcher and a home run, a solo shot by Jason Heyward. It was Wang's 2012 major league debut, after the 32-year-old returned from a hamstring injury suffered in Spring Training. Before Wang officially returned to the Nationals, Nats' skipper Davey Johnson had told reporters that the sinker-balling right-hander would work out of the pen as he did last night, explaining that Detwiler had, "... pitched himself into a role as one of the real main guys for not only this year, but for the future here." That future, at least the immediate future as part of the starting rotation, became a little less clear after Detwiler struggled in his fourth-straight start.

"I was a little disappointed in [Detwiler]," Davey Johnson said after last night's win. "He didn't take charge and go right after them. He kind of messed around with them and I think he had about 100 pitches in 4.1 [IP] or something and I like to go and give him every opportunity to get five [innings], but I was just getting a little frustrated with the fact that he wouldn't go right after them. He had good stuff today, and it was a tough hook for me. He's a heck of a pitcher. On the other hand, I had Chien-Ming Wang [warming] up for a couple of innings and I figured, 'If I'm going to use him I'd better use him now,' and he threw the ball very well. It's not easy to come out of the pen, but he threw the ball exceptionally well, had great sink, and I like what I was seeing."

Star-divide

Johnson has made no secret of the fact that he likes Chien-Ming Wang, he said just that when he spoke about Wang's return and what role he would play with the team. "There's no secret I really like Chien-Ming Wang," the manager said, but the decision upon his return was to have him work out of the pen even though his surgically-repaired shoulder made it a less-than-ideal role for the veteran right-hander. After last night's game, Johnson seemed less sure about what he'd do in the future.

Asked if the two pitchers' respective performances last night had changed his opinion of how each would be used going forward, the 69-year-old skipper was non-committal. "Yes and no," Johnson said, "I don't make any decisions on it right after a ballgame, when emotions are running pretty high. But [Detwiler] has been outstanding all year long. The last two or three outings haven't been vintage Det. He's got a great arm. Great stuff. But that one was especially difficult for me because I go to the nth degree, but I thought that was about it on him."

"[Detwiler] just wasn't going after the hitters," the Nats' manager continued, "I think he was close to 100 pitches and he had one out in the fifth. I certainly couldn't have gone past the fifth and it [got] to the point where I didn't want [Detwiler] to get beat up tired. It didn't look like a very good decision when the first guy Chien-Ming faced hits a double, but he pitched awfully good after that, so all's well that ends well."

Braves' outfielder Matt Diaz doubled in two runs on the first pitch Wang threw for the Nats this season, but the veteran right-hander got help from his defense as the Nationals gunned Diaz down trying for third and Wang retired the next batter, Jason Heyward, to preserve Washington's one-run lead after five. Wang needed just nine pitches per inning to get through each of the next two frames, giving up just a single by the opposing pitcher, Tim Hudson. In the eighth, Wang surrendered the one-out solo HR by Heyward before he was lifted for left-hander Sean Burnett, but the Nationals led 7-4 at that point after Wang had walked and eventually scored on a three-run double by Ryan Zimmerman in the top of the seventh.

Sean Burnett finished up the eighth and Tyler Clippard earned his second save of the year with a two-K, 1-2-3 ninth. Davey Johnson told reporters that he was sure Detwiler was upset with his manager after the outing, but qualified that, "He didn't say anything to me, but I'm sure he's upset not only at me, but also himself. But I still have a lot of confidence in him, and we'll worry about that later." Asked if Detwiler was feeling the pressure of knowing that there was competition for his spot with Wang once again healthy, Johnson would only say, "I don't know why," Detwiler would be, "But anything is possible." The manager wasn't making any decision last night, but a week after he'd said Detwiler had earned his spot, he wasn't willing to say he would keep it.

Evolutionary Flop: Early 4-Footed Land Animal Was No Walker?

One of Earth's earliest four-footed land animals couldn't walk, a new 3-D model suggests.

Instead, the dog-size Ichthyostega likely flopped on land, using only two of its four stubby legs for locomotion.

(Pictures: "From Fins to Wings" in National Geographic magazine.)

One of our most distant ancestors, Ichthyostega is also one of the earliest tetrapods known to have crept onto land.

Until recently, researchers thought the creature squiggled across the mud on all fours like a salamander. But the first 3-D digital reconstructions of Ichthyostega's skeleton suggest its forearms couldn't twist and turn enough to enable a four-legged gait.

The model also suggests that the creature's hind legs barely touched the ground. At best, they may have propped up Ichthyostega's rump as the animal flopped around like a modern-day mudskipper fish.

Video: Mudskipper Fish in Action

"When Ichthyostega fossils were first being found in Greenland in the 1920s, the natural assumption was that something with four limbs with digits could walk," said paleontologist Stephanie Pierce, of the Royal Veterinary College in London.

"But now we have more fossil specimens, more species, and more tools," said Pierce, who co-authored the new Ichthyostega study, published May 23 by the journal Nature.

"We definitely know that they were moving more like a mudskipper than [like] modern tetrapods."

(Related: "'Frog-amander' Fossil May Be Amphibian Missing Link.")

"Magic" Fossils

Four-limbed land animals with skeletons first arose in the water, scientists think. Only after millions of years of evolutionary change did they hit the beach during the Devonian period (prehistoric time line).

The earliest signs of their transition from swimming to walking are fossilized tracks that date back about 390 million years?about 30 million years before the first evidence of Ichthyostega was laid down.

To see how Ichthyostega might have made tracks, Pierce and her colleagues built a 3-D computer model by scanning a remarkably complete fossil from Greenland dubbed "Mr. Magic." Missing parts were filled in with scans of fossil bones from 12 other Ichthyostega specimens.

For comparison, the team also scanned and modeled the skeletons of a modern crocodile, otter, seal, platypus, and salamander.

"We moved the animals in a controlled way in the model, and Ichthyostega seemed to be very different from its modern counterparts," Pierce said. "This really highlighted the fact that Ichthyostega must have been doing something different with its legs. The question is, what?"

(Also see "Fossil Fish With 'Limbs' Is Missing Link, Study Says.")

More Like a Mudskipper

Further analysis hinted that Ichthyostega had very limited forearm motion and a stiff spine. The model also suggested that the hind limbs couldn't contribute to a forward-propelling, four-legged gait.

Instead, Pierce and her colleagues concluded, Ichthyostega likely "rowed" its forelimbs front-to-back, much as a mudskipper moves its stubby front fins to slide around in the muck.

Per Ahlberg, a paleontologist at Uppsala University who calls Ichthyostega "a close friend," said Pierce and her colleagues' work is the first and most thorough of its kind for animals transitioning from water to land.

"This is a really valuable, proper 3-D reconstruction of a Devonian tetrapod and an early land vertebrate," said Ahlberg, who wasn't involved in the study.

One item Ahlberg took issue with in the study, however, is the notion that Ichthyostega didn't do much with its hindquarters.

"There would have been a lot of muscle attachments there, and the pelvis is very large," especially compared with a fish pelvis, he said. That pelvis "had to be doing something significant or it wouldn't be there?the evolutionary cost is too large."

Pierce's team contends, however, that the hind limbs and pelvis were used more in swimming and paddling?Ichthyostega's primary means of motion, the team believes. Uppsala's Ahlberg added, "I bet Ichthyostega's stiff spine made it look bizarre when it was swimming. Sort of like a windup fish toy that you put in a bathtub."

Next, Pierce and her colleagues intend to perform nuanced calculations on the spine and reconstruct a full, lifelike model of movement for the ancient creature.

"The land was an open ecological niche, free to be exploited, and these early tetrapods knew what to do. It was theirs for the taking," Pierce said. "We want to see how they navigated this new environment."

Giant radio telescope gets split location

The world's biggest and most advanced radio telescope, capable of detecting signs of extraterrestrial life in the far reaches of the universe, will be located in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

The decision to split the location of the $2 billion "Square Kilometre Array" followed intense lobbying by the two leading bidders, South Africa one side and a joint bid from Australia and New Zealand on the other.

Scientists leading the project rejected the suggestion that the decision, which will mean higher costs, meant science had taken a back seat to political expediency.

"We were all aware of the political dimensions of this," said Jon Womersley, Chair of the Board of Directors of the SKA organisation, but he added: "It's a scientifically motivated way forward."

There is already infrastructure in South Africa and Australia, including radio telescope dishes that were built as precursors to the new array. They will now be incorporated into the SKA.

    4. Here's how to win a NASA 'present from space'

The consortium estimates that the decision to split the project will add about 10 percent to the 350 million euro ($440 million) budget for the first phase of construction.

When completed in 2024 the telescope will be made up of 3,000 dishes, each 15 metres wide, together with many more antennae, that together will give a receiver surface area of a square kilometre.

Scanning the sky 10,000 times faster and with 50 times the sensitivity of any other telescope, it will be used to study the origins of the universe and will be able to detect weak signals that could indicate the presence of extraterrestrial life.

"This hugely important step for the project allows us to progress the design and prepare for the construction phase of the telescope," said Michiel van Haarlem, Director General of the consortium.

"The SKA will transform our view of the universe; with it we will see back to the moments after the Big Bang and discover previously unexplored parts of the cosmos."

Flood of data
The SKA is more than just a scientific bauble. Global tech companies are already earmarking development funds linked to the project, which will rely on computing technology that does not even exist yet to process the flood of data it will collect. Scientists estimate that the SKA will need processing power equivalent to several million of today's fastest computers.

International Business Machines Corp <IBM.N > and Astron, the Netherlands institute for radio astronomy, announced in April a 33 million euro ($42 million), five-year deal to develop extremely fast computer systems with low power requirements for the SKA project.

"If you take the current global daily Internet traffic and multiply it by two, you are in the range of the data set that the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope will be collecting every day," said IBM Researcher Ton Engbersen at the announcement of the deal.

Other companies that have signed partnership agreements with the project include Nokia-Siemens , BAE Systems PLC, Cisco Systems Inc and Selex Galileo, a UK unit of Italian group Finmeccanica SpA.

The engineering and computing challenges are significant, not least the provision of power to run the array and the supercomputers in remote locations away from the radio interference of towns and cities.

It is overcoming those challenges that the leaders of the project argue could lead to untold spin-offs for industry. They point to Wi-Fi technology as one of the best known commercial applications to come from radio astronomy, for instance.

The first phase of construction is set to start in 2016 completion is pencilled in for 2023.

The decision was announced at a meeting of the international consortium controlling the project, at Schipol Airport in the Netherlands on Friday.

Baby Boomers and the Demographic ?Cannonball? ? MediCaring.org

Your 80-year-old mother, who can?t recognize you due to severe Alzheimer?s dementia, has developed pneumonia after being hospitalized with a broken hip. Her doctor has told you that she might pull through and that the medical team needs your input on how and where she will live after this episode: at home, or at a nursing home, and with what help?family, home care agency, and/or hospice. You realize that you don?t know what her wishes are?and that she can no longer express them. You also don?t know how you, as her sole family caregiver, will be able to take care of her or afford professional help in doing so. Meanwhile, the doctor is asking what measures should be taken, and for how long, to keep her alive. You don?t have the answers to those questions either. Suddenly, you feel very much alone, bewildered and overwhelmed.

In one sense, you?re not alone, as five prominent women writers recently explained during a roundtable discussion that Altarum Institute?s Center for Elder Care and Advanced Illness held on April 13. During the roundtable discussion, ?The Last Word: Influential Women Discuss What Matters When Loved Ones Face Aging,? (watch it online on YouTube) the presenters?three of them geriatricians, and all of them influential social commentators and family caregivers?discussed their experiences in caring for aging loved ones and patients. The writers warned that the number of aging Americans who are struggling with these issues, along with their families and friends, is already substantial and growing rapidly.

Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Ellen Goodman introduced the panel with an overview of the state of aging in America, noting that the first members of the huge baby boomer generation will turn age?85 in 2031. This demographic ?cannonball? is already hurtling toward us: each day, 10,000 baby boomers are turning 65. Goodman described her own experiences as a caregiver to her mother and related the constant and seemingly impossible decisions she had to make on her mother?s behalf. She noted that her experience has led her to develop a soon-to-be-launched program, The Conversation Project, aimed at encouraging people to think and talk about their preferences and priorities for the end of life.

Indeed, many of us haven?t given any thought to how we want to live out our final months; nor what role loved ones are likely to play during this final phase of life. Without such planning, the last months, when they come, are likely to be disorienting, frightening and overwhelming.

Geriatrician and family caregiver Cheryl Woodson, M.D., speaking from a decade of experience caring for a sick and aging parent, urged caregivers not to feel that they are not doing enough. Many have unrealistic expectations about what they can and should do, and failing to live up to these expectations can leave many feeling guilty and alone.

In fact, Dr. Woodson said, caregivers need to recognize and understand that we are facing social, cultural and demographic times unlike any in our history. We are facing a future with millions more ?old old? people who will be more disabled and frail for longer than any previous generation. Caring for these aged loved ones, Woodson said, means ?This is not your mama?s caregiving.? Indeed, it is a whole new world.

Dr. Muriel Gillick, a Harvard professor and geriatrician, addressed other unrealistic expectations many hold: The notion that if we simply eat well, exercise plenty and live right, we will live to a ripe old age and die in our sleep. That scenario is not likely to play out for the majority of us, who will, in fact, grow old and sick and die after many years of living with a serious chronic condition.

Author Susan Jacoby echoed this sentiment, pointed to the ways in which we deny the realities of aging and?instead rely on the images we see in Viagra ads: That we will all be paragliding in our old age, living out fantasies and walking into the sunset hand-in-hand with our equally spry spouse. Instead, Jacoby suggested, we must pay attention to what we really face and acknowledge the hard realities of that future and find ways in which we can cope with frailty, illness and death.

Journalist Francine Russo gave a slightly different take on the world of caregiving during the roundtable, describing the dynamics of sibling relationships in the context of caring for aging parents. She noted that many of us will revert to roles we played as children, and that those old roles will not serve us well in our efforts to serve our parents?indeed, they can tear families apart.

Finally, geriatrician Joanne Lynn described her experiences as a physician and a family caregiver, noting that in the years when she herself cared for a very sick child and a very frail in-law, she could always find people willing to support her in the former work, but very rare to offer help in the latter. She spoke of the need for neighborliness in the future, for finding ways that communities and individuals can come together to share the common work of caring for the aged. She suggested that reforms must come at the local level and that communities need to set priorities for elder care and advanced illness and determine the shape and course of their own programs and services for frail elders.

The panelists agreed on various steps proposed?ranging from policy changes to discussions families can and should conduct?to plan for the provision of supportive services that preserve the comfort and dignity of frail elders. Such steps should also take into account both the elder?s and their caregivers? emotional wellbeing and financial solvency from the onset of aging-related disability through death.

Another roundtable discussion on these topics, led by nationally known journalist Eleanor Clift, will be held on June 5 in Detroit with many of these same authors.? If you missed our first event, please register to join us for this next discussion. You can attend in person, or if you are not local to Detroit, via webcast.
