Describe your job on the average day

Wake up and review market moves overnight and implications for grain pricing for WA growers.

Contact each regional grain merchant to discuss local activities, including grower meetings, promotional activities, local weather, selling or production issues

How did you get involved with agriculture? My father was involved in providing services to farmers in Victoria, and I was always drawn to work with people from regional and rural areas

Education

Law and Commerce degree

Masters of Business

If you studied/ trained in agriculture, why did you choose that degree/ certificate? Didn?t study Ag.

What are/were you plans after school/TAFE/university? To work in an industry, and with a company, which had good growth opportunities combined with interesting and changing operating environment

Job history?

Lawyer ? Anderson Rice Lawyers

Associate ? Hall & Wilcox Lawyers

Company Secretary / Legal Counsel ? Emerald Group

General Manager ? West Coast Region ? Emerald Group

What are your interests? Family, Sport, House Renovations

What is your favourite thing about the industry? The people. The grower customers that we deal with are extremely friendly and welcoming

Best experience in agriculture? Assisting Emerald to grow to be one of the leading Australian Grain Marketers, which in early 2010 lead to an investment from Sumitomo Corporation when it purchased 50% equity in Emerald. Being involved in this business as it has grown, and particularly the transaction which has linked Emerald into a global network, with offices in 66 countries around the world, has been amazing.

Worst experience in agriculture? The difficult conversations with grower customers that were facing financial and personal ruin due to the drought in WA during 2010

What do you think will be the biggest challenges of the agricultural industry in the future?

1. The separation between regional Australia and metropolitan Australia

2. Ensuring the talented young people remain in regional Australia

Why do you think less people are becoming involved in agriculture? There is more automation on farm, and farms are getting larger. There is an associated reduction in the employment opportunities for regional people and the services in the regional locations are diminishing as a result.

What advice do you have for people thinking about getting into agriculture? Do it ? it is very rewarding

How important do you think an agricultural background is to become involved in the industry? Not a requirement, but it can provide an impetus (incentive)

What do you think is the most common misconception about agriculture? That you need to work on a farm to work in agriculture.
